Hello Montessori Families!

Please note, there is no school next Friday, October 2nd. Teachers have a professional learning day!

On Monday, Montessori communities all over the world celebrated International Day of Peace.

Peace is at the heart of the Montessori philosophy. Dr. Maria Montessori believed that education has the power to help create a more peaceful world by teaching children how to understand themselves, care for others, solve problems peacefully, and contribute positively to their community. If you'd like to learn more, see below in the Parent Education section of the newsletter! Classrooms celebrated individually on Monday, but we are taking a few minutes of our first school-wide assembly next week to celebrate as a whole school community!

5K through 8th grade families - if you haven't had a chance yet, please log in to your NextPath account to view fall assessment results. If you have any questions, please reach out to your child's teacher or to myself!

Have a great weekend!

WMS Green Team

Montessori Green Team presented at the 16th Annual Tosa Green Summit Saturday, Sept 19th! Thank you to the student and parent volunteers who helped spread the word about composting in our school! Grace, her mom, Lillian, & Ms. Kait were at the summit, and many other UE Green Team members prepared materials, such as the trifold board, script, and practical life compost sorting with play food. Ask your kids ANY questions about compost and data collection at our school. Green team is great for our school!

A Monthly Message from the Tosa School Nurses

Fuel, Rest & Be Your Best!

Did you know that sleep and nutrition can help power a great school day? Our brains and bodies need nutritious food and plenty of sleep to do their best!

Sleep: A Time to Recharge!

Sleep is more than just bedtime—it’s when growing bodies and brains get a chance to rest, recharge, and get ready for tomorrow! In Wisconsin, approximately 29.4–33.4% of children ages 4 months to 14 years were found to get insufficient sleep.

Children ages 6–12 should aim for 9–12 hours of sleep each night. Getting enough sleep can help children stay focused, improve concentration, and support academic performance.

How can you help your child catch those ZZZs?

  • Set a regular bedtime. Try to stick to the same bedtime—even on weekends!

  • Power down screens. Turn off tablets, TVs, phones, and other screens at least one hour before bedtime. This helps children fall asleep faster and get quality rest.

  • Create a calming bedtime routine. Reading, taking a bath, or listening to quiet music can help signal that it’s time to wind down.

Looking for a fun way to talk about sleep with your child(ren)? Check out the “I See the Animals Sleeping: A Bedtime Story” app that explores the different ways animals sleep while emphasizing why sleep is important (for both animals and children).

Breakfast: Start the Day with Brain Fuel!

What happens when kids start the school day with breakfast? Eating breakfast can positively affect school performance. Children who eat breakfast may have better concentration, memory, and attention.

Research has found that children who eat breakfast before a standardized test have significantly higher scores in math, spelling, and reading compared with children who do not eat breakfast.

How can you make breakfast happen on busy mornings?

  • Make time for breakfast. Whenever possible, give your child enough time to sit down and enjoy a meal before school.

  • Grab and go! If a sit-down breakfast isn't in the cards, keep quick, nutrient-dense foods ready to grab on the way out the door.

  • Think outside the box! Breakfast doesn't have to look like “breakfast.” If your picky eater isn't a fan of traditional breakfast foods, try offering something nontraditional. Make it fun!

  • Let us help! Breakfast is available at all our schools. For more information check out our website.

Fuel their bodies. Recharge their brains. Let them be their best!

PE Highlights

This week in the gym and on the field:

Children's House climbed our traverse wall, working on balance, whole body strength, coordination and endurance.

Lower El also worked on climbing skills, as well as using jump ropes, scooters and tag to review routines and expectations for PE work.

Upper El used running and passing/catching games to build skills for flag football activities and team sports dynamics.

AP jumped right into teamwork and leadership challenges during flag football games, taking advantage of our outdoor space to actively engage all 31 students!

Parent Education Parent Education

Welcome to this year's first parent education section! We try to share information about Maria Montessori and the Montessori philosophy throughout the school year to help parents learn more about what we do here!

In a Montessori classroom, peace is not simply the absence of conflict. Peace is a skill that children learn and practice every day.

Children are given opportunities to develop:

  • Respect for self and others – Children learn that every person is valuable and deserving of kindness, dignity, and respect.
  • Grace and courtesy – Montessori classrooms intentionally teach children how to greet others, listen, take turns, ask for help, resolve disagreements, and care for their shared environment.
  • Independence and responsibility – When children are trusted to make choices and take responsibility for their actions, they develop a sense of ownership and respect for their community.
  • Conflict resolution – Rather than simply having adults solve every disagreement, children are supported in learning how to communicate, listen to one another, identify problems, and work toward peaceful solutions.
  • Empathy and perspective-taking – Montessori encourages children to understand that others may have different feelings, experiences, ideas, and needs.
  • Care for the environment and community – Children learn that they are part of something larger than themselves and have a responsibility to care for their classroom, school, and the world around them.

Peace education also means recognizing that children are still learning. We do not expect children to navigate every conflict perfectly. Instead, we see challenging moments as opportunities to teach and practice skills such as self-regulation, communication, empathy, problem-solving, and making amends.

Our goal is not simply to create a peaceful classroom today. We are helping children develop the skills, habits, and mindset to become peaceful and responsible members of their communities throughout their lives.

In Montessori, peace begins with the child and grows outward—from self, to relationships, to community, and ultimately to the world.
