Hello GMS family!

During the month of April, our valley promotes Mental Health Awareness and we're doing the same at GMS. We have a strong Sources of Strength club at our school, and Peer Leaders have decided to dedicate their time to spreading awareness about Mental Health next week with dress up days and a school dance! This is a meaningful time to recognize that mental health is just as important as physical health. Middle school can be an exciting time of growth, but it can also bring stress, social pressure, and emotional ups and downs as students navigate academics, friendships, and personal change. Helping students understand their emotions and know when to ask for support can make a lasting difference in their well-being.

Mental health awareness begins with creating a culture where students feel safe talking about what they are experiencing. Encouraging open conversations at home and at school helps children understand that feelings such as anxiety, sadness, frustration, or loneliness are normal and manageable with support. Simple habits like getting enough sleep, staying active, spending time outdoors, limiting screen time, and maintaining healthy routines can also positively impact emotional wellness.

Families can support mental health by checking in regularly with their child, listening without judgment, and reminding them that seeking help is a sign of strength. Sometimes a few minutes of genuine conversation each day can help a child feel seen and understood. When schools and families work together to prioritize mental wellness, students are more likely to develop resilience, confidence, and the tools they need to thrive both inside and outside the classroom.

You can also check out the Sources of Strength website for more ideas and to see what this club is all about. And as always, reach out to me if you have questions or if I can help in any way! Go, Mustangs!

Track and Field season is right around the corner! Practice begins on March 26th. Mandatory parent meeting is Thursday, March 27 at 5:15. Requirements for participation: current physical, signed Code of Conduct, payment of $75 fee Questions? Mary Nordberg

Energy Drinks (Prohibited)

GMS is committed to supporting student health, focus, and well-being throughout the school day. In alignment with this goal, we have established the following guidelines regarding energy drinks and caffeinated beverages. High-caffeine energy drinks have been shown to negatively impact: Student focus and learning. Sleep patterns. Heart rate and overall health. Behavior and emotional regulation. Energy drinks are not allowed on GMS school grounds or at school-sponsored events.

Energy drinks include beverages marketed specifically for increased energy, alertness, or performance and often contain high levels of caffeine, sugar, and other stimulants.

If a student brings an energy drink to school:

  • The drink will be confiscated

  • The student may be asked to dispose of the beverage

  • Repeated violations may result in parent/guardian contact and a referral to the district nurse

We recognize that some students may consume beverages with lower levels of caffeine, such as tea, coffee, and flavored or sparkling drinks with small amounts of caffeine. These beverages are permitted in moderation under the following conditions: They must be in a reasonable size (no oversized or highly concentrated drinks). They must not disrupt learning or student behavior. Staff may restrict consumption if it is impacting a student’s focus, health, or conduct. School staff and administration reserve the right to make decisions regarding any beverage brought to school if it is deemed unsafe, excessively caffeinated, or disruptive to the learning environment.
