Encouraging Literacy at Home!
Dear Families,
Did you know increasing how much you talk at home can positively affect your child's reading and writing? It's true! The more we engage in conversation with our children, the greater their vocabulary will be and vocabulary accounts for an estimated 80% of reading comprehension!
Check out the links below for great back to school conversation starters and for more information on the impact of conversational turns. For more details on increasing talk at home, contact literacy coach, Breanna Carden, at breanna_carden@amherstk12.org.

PBIS @ POWERS
PBIS Update:
There have been lots of questions about the follow up lessons for Wellness. Here are some answers to the questions that have been asked.
Why are we doing this?
The answer to why stems from our flow sheet made by our MTSS team with collaboration from our PBIS team. If you look in the Tier One column you will see the Wellness lessons discussed as well as the follow up lesson. You can click on this link to see the flowchart Response to Intervention Flow Chart SEL and Behavior .
I am too busy. Do I have to do the lesson?
This is a RECOMMENDED and ENCOURAGED activity. If you are stretched too thin and need support, please put the empty sheet back into the box that is labeled near the teacher mailboxes. Wellness teachers will make sure that every class has a poster so that every class can find one of their posters around the building.
Why common language?
Common language increases consistency, understanding and efficiency across our building. We are explicitly teaching behavior across the building to increase positive behaviors. If nothing else we ask that you review the behaviors on the follow up lesson sheet so that you are aware of the language being used across the building. We are working on a team approach.Fragrances and Spray Colognes at School
Please discourage students from bringing in sprays or cologne to school.
Every year we have an incident or two of students spraying a cologne or fragrance on a bus or in a classroom. Today, we had an incident at school where another student ended up having a reaction to a spray that another student squirted. Everyone is ok but we want to discourage students from bringing these items to school. Thanks, in advance, for your support.
