Feed (ing) theMind and Body January 2021 / Newsletter of the Malden SchoolLibrarians

Happy New Year and Welcome from your Librarians!

Welcome to the first issue of the Feed(ing) the Body and Mind newsletter. Our mission is to promote a life long love of reading for our students, to empower them with the tools to critically examine and evaluate information, and to encourage them to explore our increasingly diverse world with an open and inquisitive mind.

In our upcoming newsletters, we will be highlighting more useful apps for the K-4, 5-8 and 9-12 students and will feature a monthly research tip. Going forward, we will continue to share short book reviews, a recipe or two, a few crafts and a local place to get outside and unwind a bit.

Kamala Harris Rooted in Justice

When Kamala Harris was young, she often accompanied her parents to civil rights marches—so many, in fact, that when her mother asked a frustrated Kamala what she wanted, the young girl responded with: “Freedom!”

As Kamala grew from a small girl in Oakland to a senator running for president, it was this long-fostered belief in freedom and justice for all people that shaped her into the inspiring figure she is today. From fighting for the use of a soccer field in middle school to fighting for the people of her home state in Congress, Senator Harris used her voice to speak up for what she believed in and for those who were otherwise unheard. And now this dedication has led her all the way to being elected Vice President of the United States.

The Truths We Hold : An American Journey

With her election to the vice presidency, her election to the U.S. Senate, and her position as attorney general of California, Kamala Harris has blazed trails throughout her entire political career. But how did she achieve her goals? What values and influences guided and inspired her along the way? We learn about the impact that her family and community had on her life, and see what led her to discover her own sense of self and purpose. The Truths We Hold traces her journey as she explored the values she holds most dear—those of community, equality, and justice. An inspiring and empowering memoir, this book challenges us to become leaders in our own lives and shows us that with determination and perseverance all dreams are possible.

Get Outside!

Each month we will feature a local outdoor area where you can get away from the computer screen and explore nature. This month takes us to Waitts Mountain in Malden. Waitts Mountain, also known as Waitts Mount, is the highest point in Malden (at 217 feet tall) with some spectacular views of the surrounding areas including the Boston skyline. This area features an historic park called Waitts Mount Park which was used for the Fresh Air Camp during WWII. It is also the spot where people watched the Battle of Bunker Hill and the final departure of the British fleet from Boston. There is a recreational loop walk, rock climbing and a children's adventure playground. It is also a great place for bird watching.
