TCS Cell Phone Policy

Student Use of Wireless Communication Devices

All devices must be stored in a district-approved manner (e.g., locked pouch) while inside a school building during the instructional day.

Exceptions to this policy include:

  • Documented medical needs

  • Accommodations outlined in an IEP or 504 Plan

  • Emergency situations

  • Direct instructional use as authorized by staff

In the event of an emergency, all communication must be directed through the main office. Students who need to contact home should request assistance from a staff member.

Students participating in off-campus programs (e.g., dual enrollment, career and technical education) are expected to adhere to the policies of the host site. Upon returning to campus, students must comply with TCS device storage requirements.

  • Students are not permitted to use wireless communication devices during instructional time unless explicitly authorized by a staff member for educational purposes.

The Importance of Attendance in Elementary School

Consistent school attendance plays a critical role in a child’s academic and social success. Each day of instruction builds upon the last, and when students are absent, they miss important opportunities to learn, practice new skills, and engage with their peers.

Elementary school sets the foundation for future learning. Research shows that students who develop strong attendance habits in the early grades are more likely to read proficiently by third grade, succeed in middle and high school, and graduate on time. On the other hand, frequent absences—whether excused or unexcused—can cause students to fall behind academically, making it more difficult to catch up as lessons grow more complex.

Beyond academics, attending school daily also helps children develop important life skills, such as responsibility, time management, and perseverance. It also allows them to form positive relationships with teachers and classmates, building confidence and a sense of belonging within the school community.

Families play a vital role in ensuring strong attendance. By establishing routines, scheduling appointments outside of school hours when possible, and emphasizing the value of education at home, parents and guardians help children understand that being present every day matters.

At Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary, we are committed to partnering with families to support regular attendance. Together, we can ensure that every student has the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed.

School Safety and School Drills

The safety of our students and staff is our top priority. At Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary, we are committed to creating a safe, secure, and supportive environment where all children can learn and grow.

To ensure everyone is prepared in the event of an emergency, we practice a variety of safety drills throughout the school year. These include:

  • Fire Drills – to practice evacuating the building quickly and safely.

  • Severe Weather Drills – to prepare for tornadoes or other weather-related emergencies.

  • Lockdown Drills – to practice keeping students safe inside the building in the event of a threat.

  • Evacuation Drills – to practice safely moving to an alternate location if needed.

These drills are not intended to cause fear, but rather to empower our students and staff to respond calmly and appropriately during real situations. Teachers take time to explain each drill in an age-appropriate manner so that students understand the importance of safety without feeling alarmed.

We encourage families to talk with their children about these drills and reinforce the importance of listening carefully and following directions. By working together, we can help ensure that our school remains a safe place for every child to learn and thrive.
