Title I Overview
ESSA
Title I
- Title I schools receive extra funding (Title I dollars) from the federal government. These dollars are used to:
- identify students experiencing academic difficulties and provide assistance to help these students
- purchase additional staff, programs, materials, and/or supplies
- conduct parent and family engagement meetings, trainings, events, and/or activities
Title I Part A provides resources to schools and districts to ensure that all children have a fair, equitable, and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education and close educational achievement gaps. Title I Part A is intended to support LEAs in improving teaching by promoting effective instruction for at-risk children, expanding eligibility of schools for school wide programs that serve all children, encourage school-based improvement planning and accountability, promoting meaningful parent and family engagement, and focusing resources on the schools with the highest percentage of students living in poverty.
Title I in Moultonborough NH
The MSD Title I program is designed to provide extra support to students who need help reaching their goals in reading and mathematics. To ensure the program reaches those who need it most, the district uses a specific process to determine which students qualify for these services.
How Students Qualify
The district looks at every student using an eligibility sheet that tracks various assessment scores. A point system is used to rank these scores; students with the lowest points are identified as having the greatest need and are prioritized for services.
- Automatic Eligibility: Students who are migrant or homeless are automatically eligible for the program.
- Special Services: Students already receiving Special Education or ESL (English as a Second Language) services can still receive Title I support based on their assessment scores and if staff are available.
What is Measured?
The specific tests and skills measured depend on your child’s grade level:
- Reading (Grades K-2): Assessment focuses on "phonological awareness" (how children hear and work with sounds), letter identification, and decoding words.
- Reading (Grades 3-5): Assessment includes spelling inventories, grade-level word lists, and the STAR Reading Assessment.
- Mathematics (Grades 1-8): Evaluations include the STAR Math assessment, screenings for "number sense" (understanding how numbers work), and basic computation skills.
The Importance of Your Feedback
The program does not rely on test scores alone. Teacher and parent feedback are vital parts of the eligibility process. The district considers your input when deciding if Title I services are the right fit for your child.
The eligibility forms are reviewed every 6-8 weeks to ensure that students are served in rank order of need, regardless of what grade they are in. At this time a child may be released from Title 1 intervention or a student may become eligible at different points throughout the school year based on data.
MCS Math Family Fun Night
Moultonborough Central School recently hosted a highly successful Title I Family Math Night with an exciting escape room theme, drawing a strong turnout of students and families. Participants worked together to solve math-based puzzles, crack codes, and complete interactive challenges designed to promote teamwork, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
