WAUWATOSA MONTESSORI SCHOOL
January 17th Newsletter
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Hello Wauwatosa Montessori School Community,
Our students have been taking time to engage in acts of service and to thank members of our community who fulfill important services. Students have been engaging in writing postcards to community members which will be delivered on an ongoing basis throughout this month as part of our school-wide focus on the virtue of service.
I encourage everyone to take time to reflect on the MLK Day observance on Monday, January 20th as a "day on" and not a "day off," as that was the legacy of Dr. King. At Wauwatosa Montessori School, we strive to actively create a just and equitable society. MLK Day was established to honor the life and legacy of Dr. King, and to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities. We are very proud of our students who have been engaging in service learning opportunities. Many teachers have shared how students have been initiating service projects within their classroom communities and beyond. A primary goal of our school is to develop stewards of the world community and earth, and we are seeing our students joyfully engaging in this work.
Thanks to everyone who ordered out or dined in at Maggio’s Wood Fired Pizza this week! Thank you to our amazing PTSA for organizing this event! Our staff was also very grateful for the PTSA stocking the lounge this week with goodies!
All School Read!
We encourage families to continue keeping up the the reading calendars sent home! The students have been enjoying Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library by Chris Grabstein so far! All students are encouraged to turn in trivia questions! This year our drawings will focus on the number of trivia questions turned in per class and later on in the reading schedule, we'll shift to drawing individual names (the final week!)! Literacy Night is coming up on February 21st from 5:30-7 p.m.! Our Literacy Committee (Jenice Carolan, Jen Jacobs, Jason Lawent, Smith Wooldridge and myself) has finalized our activities for Literacy Night. Please consider joining the volunteer effort on the night itself, as we are looking for volunteers for Literacy Night. Stay tuned for a sign up genius!
STAR testing
Next week is our final week of STAR testing for the winter window for 2nd through 8th grade students. STAR testing results will be sent home in the next couple of weeks. Please help your child by making sure your child gets a good night’s sleep, eats a healthy breakfast, and has a healthy snack.
Staffing Update
We have begun interviews for our Special Education Teacher opening. I am hopeful that we will have a preferred candidate following those interviews. I will send additional communication to Wauwatosa Montessori School stakeholders when I have an update on the hiring process.
We are continuing our search for a Physical Education Teacher. In the interim, Isa Herman is subbing in gym class. Further there has been a change in the District regarding how substitutes are assigned. Instead of having a building substitute automatically report to each of the schools, our new procedure is for absences to be picked up by substitutes throughout the District. Staff have been encouraged to request preferred substitutes including Ms. Isa.

The Division of Pupil and Family Supports will be hosting a two-part book study on The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt. The planning team for this book study is seeking a general idea of how many individuals would be interested in participating in order to properly plan. As these plans unfold, additional information will be shared with the community. Virtual options will be available as well as a request for accommodations and child care for those who may need it January 15th 6PM (Book Parts 1, 2, and 3), Location: McKinley Elementary School, 2435 N 89th St.
- February 12th 6PM (Book Part 4), Location: Lincoln Elementary School, 1741 N Wauwatosa Ave.
Please complete this form if you are interested in attending any/all book study sessions.
Stay tuned because the WMS PTSA is looking into hosting a break-out session after this book study to further discuss this book and actionable next steps in our own school community
