28th Street Elementary
Official Parent News Publication of 28th Street Elementary
Week 1.8: September 14-18, 2026
📣 Stay Connected, Stay Informed!
Our Anchor parent newsletter is one of the best ways to stay up to date with what’s happening at 28th Street Elementary! Please take a few minutes each week to read the newsletter and stay informed about important dates, school events, reminders, and celebrations.
We also encourage parents to stay connected with your child’s teacher. Communication between home and school is an important part of student success. Ask questions, celebrate your child’s progress, and work with your child’s teacher to support learning at home.
📚 Remember: Folders go home every Thursday! Please take time to look through your child’s folder to see what they are learning and how they are progressing in the classroom. These folders provide a great opportunity to celebrate successes and identify ways we can work together to help your child grow.
When families and teachers work together, our Buccaneers are better positioned to learn, grow, and succeed! ⚓💙🧡

🚀 Exploring Career Pathways!
At Gulfport School District, we believe every student deserves the opportunity to discover their strengths, explore their passions, and envision a bright future. Beginning in the 2026–2027 school year, students across PK–12 will participate in Career Pathways, connecting classroom learning to real-world opportunities.
Students will explore careers and industries, participate in monthly career-focused lessons and activities, and develop important career-readiness skills throughout the year. Our goal is to help students become capable professionals, critical thinkers, and responsible citizens prepared for college, career, and life.
Families play an important role! We encourage you to talk with your child about careers, support extracurricular and community opportunities, and look for ways to help them explore their interests and future possibilities. Together, we can help every student discover their path and prepare for a bright future!
🩺 Career of the Week: Physical Therapist
This week, we are exploring the exciting career of a Physical Therapist! 🏃♀️💪
Physical therapists help people recover from injuries, improve movement, build strength, and get back to doing the activities they love. This career combines science, health, problem-solving, and compassion to make a difference in the lives of others.
Our students have the opportunity to explore this career through Sports Medicine in the AIG Pathway at Gulfport High School, gaining exposure to careers in sports medicine and healthcare. We are also grateful for our community partners, Bienville Orthopedic and EXCEEDS Physical Therapy, for helping students connect classroom learning to real-world careers.
Dream big, explore your interests, and chart your course toward a bright future! ⚓💙🧡

Policies & Procedures
ARRIVAL & DISMISSAL
Our doors open at 7:00 am. Breakfast is served from 7:00 am - 7:20 am each morning. All students should enter through the cafeteria when arriving between 7:00 am and 7:20 am. Students arriving after 7:20 am should enter through the main entrance of the school. Students arriving after 7:30 am are considered tardy, and an adult MUST come in the school to sign the student in.
We begin dismissing bus students at 2:25 pm and car riders and walkers are dismissed at 2:30 pm. We ask that parents remain in their vehicles and a staff member will assist students getting in cars. All car riders should be picked up by 2:45 pm. If it is after 2:45 pm, a parent will need to come into the school to sign the student out. For walkers, a staff member will walk the students to the corner of 46th Avenue and 31st Street.
CHECK-OUT POLICY
If a student must be checked out prior to dismissal, the adult checking the student out must be present in the office prior to 2:00 pm. Check-outs are not allowed after 2:00 pm.
TRANSPORTATION CHANGES
If you have any transportation changes to make for your child or children, you must notify the office staff by 12:00 p.m. Transportation changes must be made and documented by the front office staff, not with the classroom teacher. We do not take transportation changes after 12:00 p.m.
SCHOOL DRESS CODE
Parents and families, please take a moment each morning to check your child’s clothing before they leave for school. Your help is essential in making sure our students arrive at school dressed appropriately and ready to learn. We appreciate your partnership in helping us maintain a positive, respectful, and learning-focused school environment. 💙🧡
Please remember:
- Shorts and skirts must be at least fingertip length when your child’s arms are resting at their sides.
- Jeans and pants may not have holes or tears above the knee.
- Clothing that does not meet the school dress code may require a parent or guardian to bring a change of clothes to school.
Please review the 28th Street Elementary Student Handbook for complete dress code expectations.
Bus Procedures
Bus Guidelines
Students are expected to follow the bus expecations for the 2026-2027 school year. Students who engage in inappropriate or disruptive behavior may lose bus privileges, in accordance with the student handbook.
Bus I.D. Badges
Students must have their school-issued I.D. badge to ride the bus. Students who consistently fail to have their badge will not be allowed to ride the bus until a replacement is purchased (cost is $5) or alternative transportation is arranged.
Your support is greatly appreciated in helping us keep all students safe during transportation.
🚌 Bus of the Week🚌
🚌⭐ Be a Bus of the Week Winner!
Every week, our buses have the opportunity to earn the title of Bus of the Week! Buses with NO discipline referrals are entered into our weekly drawing for a special treat. 🎉
Students, remember that your choices matter! Show responsibility, respect, and leadership by following bus expectations, listening to your driver, and helping make your bus a safe and positive place for everyone.
No referrals = A chance to win! 🏆
Let’s keep making great choices and charting a course to excellence—one bus ride at a time! ⚓🚌
