Tampa Teen Natalie Fischer Makes U.S. National Flag Football Team
Natalie Fischer never planned to play flag football. As a dedicated young tennis player, her athletic path seemed set until a pivotal conversation with her seventh-grade physical education teacher at Plato Academy Tampa changed everything.
That teacher, Coach Geoff Harris, saw something in Fischer that she didn't yet see in herself. His persistent encouragement convinced the reluctant student to join the school's girls' flag football team despite her complete inexperience with the sport.
"I liked the sport from the very first match," Fischer recalls of her introduction to the game. That first season proved remarkably successful as she scored 36 touchdowns and helped lead her team to a championship.
What began as a casual school activity quickly evolved into something more significant. Under Coach Harris's continued mentorship, Fischer joined the Pirate Bay Krewe Travel Flag Team, expanding her competitive experience beyond school...

Learning About Greek Cuisine
Greek language students recently experienced a delightful cultural immersion, thanks to Ms. Kalligas' Cultural Connections series. In a unique class project, a student from Dunedin Highland Middle School (DHMS) visited the Plato Academy St. Pete campus to teach 7th graders how to prepare traditional Greek dishes—and shared the delicious meal with them afterward.
Sixth-grader Paraskevas (Vakis) Mara-Kalligas brought his enthusiasm for cooking, while the students contributed their love for food, creating an unforgettable experience. Using video tutorials, Vakis guided the class through the preparation of fluffy pita bread, tangy tzatziki, succulent pork souvlaki, and a refreshing village salad, offering expert tips along the way.
The session concluded with a lively Q&A and a shared meal, where students enjoyed flavorful dishes and engaging conversations. The event beautifully underscored Anthony Bourdain’s sentiment that sharing a meal is one of the best ways to connect with others.
