Erin's Law

The state of Illinois requires schools to educate all students (pre-school through 12th grade) about sexual abuse and assault awareness, Erin's Law legislation. Information regarding Erin's Law can be found at www.erinslaw.org.

SD 104 use age-appropriate lessons to educate students about: safe touch and unsafe touch, safe secrets and unsafe secrets, and how to get away and tell a trusted adult. The lessons teach children to recognize child sexual abuse and report abuse. This will take place during students' regularly scheduled social emotional learning lessons.

If you DO NOT want your child to participate in this lesson, you must complete the opt-out permission slip by February 18th.

There will be a parent program on February 16th from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM via Zoom.

HMH Math

Students are using a new math curriculum this year called HMH into Math. This curriculum offers students an interactive and concept driven learning experience for math.

Art Class

Students are excited to working on art projects that reflect themselves as they get to know our new art teacher, Ms. Zucker. Here students are busy working on a unique hand project.

Physical Education

Being physically active allows for our students to experience a well rounded educational experience. Students strategize how they will cooperate to defend against other students trying to make it to the other side of the gym.

A Good Book Has No Ending

Students do enjoy reading novels of their choice. Graphic novels as pictured here allow for students to read not only the words on the page but also the visual imagery.

ELA WIN

Daily, students receive time dedicated to individualized support in math and reading during WIN (What I Need). This allows staff to work with students in smaller groups, and provides students extra practice they may need.

Black History Month

Throughout the month of February, Black History Month is celebrated. While we celebrate diversity throughout our curriculum daily, this month offers an additional time to highlight wonderful achievements of African-Americans. Below are some influential people, who helped make the world a better more just place by their actions. We celebrate....

Ruby Bridges: This strong six year old was the first student to integrate into an elementary school in Louisiana in 1960. Throughout her life, Ruby was a lifelong advocate for racial equality.

Mary Field: Better known as Stagecoach Mary, Field was the first African-American to work for the US Postal Service. She was known for being the fastest applicant to hitch a team of six horses, and she was 63 years old at the time!

Muddy Waters: The father of Chicago Blues moved from Mississippi to Chicago as he followed his dream to be a full time musician. He is credited with introducing the electric slide guitar.

PBIS at Wharton

Staff is dedicated to implementing PBIS, Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports. Our focus is on the prevention of inappropriate school behaviors. At Wharton, we consistently teach and support students to be respectful, responsible, and safe.

If our students reduce their disruption office discipline referrals this month, students have the opportunity to earn a glow party at the end of the month.
