Principals' Message Principals' Message

Hello Scioto Families!

It's hard to believe it's already February. This school year seems to be going by very fast! We hope this newsletter finds you and your family staying warm and in good health! It has been a very positive start to the 3rd quarter. Students have been working hard learning new skills, connecting with their peers, problem solving, and growing their R Factor toolbox.

Throughout the month of January, students were introduced to R Factor Discipline #4: Adjust and Adapt. This was great timing as there's been a lot of changes. Although it's easy to be negative and complain about change, "Adjust and Adapt" helps us understand that we need to see 3 things in the "changes" around us:

#1 Necessity: What is the "why" behind the change?

#2 Opportunity: How can I grow from this change?

#3 Advantage: How can I use this change to my advantage and the advantage of others?

In life things change and we want to equip our students with the necessary tools to "Adjust and Adapt" to changes that occur in their lives. Read more about R4: Adjust and Apart in the section below.

We are excited about joining over 173 countries in the celebration of World Read Aloud Day tomorrow, 2-2-22! Don't forget its a PAJAMA DAY for all students! The day will be focused on literacy and the importance of reading. Books connect people. They allow us the opportunity to be taken to a different place in our minds, be creative in our thinking, and challenge us to predict and infer events. Books are POWERFUL and we are excited to give students and staff this opportunity. Special thanks to our PTO for donating one book per classroom to be raffled off throughout the day!

We are also looking forward to sharing student progress with our families at Parent Teacher Conferences on February 8th. Please be sure to connect with your child's classroom teacher to set up a time! This is a great opportunity to hear their successes and areas of needed support.

Please never hesitate to reach out to us with any questions. Thanks for being a part of our TEAM!

R4: Adjust and Adapt R4: Adjust and Adapt

In January students were introduced to R Factor Discipline #4: Adjust and Adapt. The ability to Adjust and Adapt in response to change in a POSITIVE and PROACTIVE way is an essential life skill. We know that by resenting or resisting change will not make the change go away, but will make it more stressful and difficult to deal with. Life is constantly changing and we want students to be able to make ON PATH responses to the changes around them.

We need to Adjust and Adapt when...

#1 We don't get the outcome we want. Sometimes we do all the right things. We apply E+R=O (event + response = outcome). We are faced with an event, we press pause, we get our minds right and we step up to make an on path choice and STILL don't get the outcome we wanted. That happens sometimes and that's a reason why we need to Adjust and Adapt. Our O (outcome) is feedback on how well our R (response) is working. Success requires constant adjustment.

#2 The event changes. For example, you get to the airport and your flight is cancelled. You get to school and you have a guest teacher for the day. Maybe a meeting is rescheduled. These are examples of when we need to press pause, adjust and adapt and step up to make an discipline driven response.

It's worth restating that we need to see these 3 things in the changes around us:

#1 Necessity: What is the "why" behind the change?

#2 Opportunity: How can I grow from this change?

#3 Advantage: How can I use this change to my advantage and the advantage of others?

We encourage our students to have a positive mindset in response to change.

Below is a video clip we shared with students during ouR time. We encouraged our students to think, "How did Maui respond when his outcome changed? He did all the right things. He defeated the snail to get his hook back. He was courageous and applied ERO and still didn't get the outcome he wanted. How did he respond?

Moana: Maui get his transformation back

Celebrating and Honoring our Educational Aides

Our Educational Aides are an essential piece to our building operating efficiently. Their passion for helping students shows in their actions, attitude, and their words. We appreciate all they do our our students, staff, and families we serve. On January 21st our teaching staff surprised our educational aides with a breakfast! It was wonderful to celebrate each of them and the value they bring to Scioto!

Quick Ways to Calm Down

Sometimes you’ll need a quick way to help your child calm down and you don’t have much with you. Maybe it’s when you’re out at Target or stuck in traffic. These tips will come in handy at those times:

  • Imagine your favorite place - it’s like taking a mini vacation wherever you are

  • Think of your favorite things

  • Name animals alphabetically (alligator, bear, cow, dog, etc…)

  • Squeeze Something (play dough, clay, silly putty, your fists, a stress ball)

  • Get a Cold Drink of Water

  • 54321 Grounding - go through each of your 5 senses

  • Give yourself a hug - squeeze tight!

  • Remember the words to a song you love

  • Do a hook up

  1. Put your arms straight out in front of you, palms facing out.

  2. Put one hand over the other at the wrists and interlace your fingers.

  3. Swoop your hands and arms toward your body and then place your interlaced hands on your chest.

  4. Cross your feet at the ankles and put your tongue on the roof of your mouth.

  5. Stay still for one minute.

Music

Grades K through 5 have been thinking about the various roles of musicians, with help from the music of John Denver and the Okee Dokee Brothers. Grades K-2 are listening to piano "cues" that tell us when to stand, sit, walk, skip, march, and jog! Grades 3-5 are brushing up their skills on reading "stacked verses."

Gym

In the world of physical education students are continuing to work hard and give me their best. Grades K-3 are finishing what to do with a swim noodle. They also are enjoying the parachute and making the animals fly. Grades 4-5 are learning matball and will begin floor hockey. I hope the students are having some fun in the snow!
