Students on recess couldn't stop watching the praying mantis they spotted! We had so much fun talking about how looking like a stick kept it camouflaged and safe.

Principal's Message Principal's Message

đŸ‘‰Reminder - There is no school for students Monday, September 21st.đŸ‘ˆ

Students have been working hard taking MAP and Acadience testing this week, and teachers can't wait to use these assessments to know the best next steps with students. Second grade students learned from our local Gahanna Police Officer Jones about car safety during a Buckle Up for Brutus presentation.

A shout out to our families for all you do each day to support your students!

Enjoy your long weekend together and we will see our students on Tuesday.

With PRIDE!

Did you know Goshen Lane has the honor of having students from over 20 different countries?! (Pictured left to right) Mrs. Horton, Mrs. Dorsett, Mrs. Velazquez, and Mrs. Steiger teach our English Learners (EL) at Goshen Lane. They LOVE supporting students and families from lots of cultures and language backgrounds. In the classroom, they support our students with reading, writing, listening, and speaking. They also host GNN, our school's morning news show - so your child may have "seen them on TV" this year.

Start with Hello Week! Start with Hello Week!

Next week Goshen Lane, along with other elementary schools is GJPS, will celebrate Start with Hello Week. This week was developed by Sandy Hook Promise with the goal of creating connections and a sense of belonging for all students. Each day we will have a different clothing theme and special guests greeting our students as they enter the building. We want all of our students to know that making a connection is as easy as starting with a "Hello!" Please see the flyer for our special spirit day attire throughout the week.

Some families will be receiving communication from GJPS before the end of September regarding their child’s attendance. This is to be in compliance with HB 96 - schools must contact families and begin outreach when a student misses 5% of the minimum required hours. Families who have missed at least 2 days of school will receive email communication, and families who have missed 10% or more will receive paper letters. A sample message is below:

Dear Families, Ohio law now requires schools to track and report all student absences, regardless of whether they are excused or unexcused. Because of this, you will soon receive an update from us regarding your student's current attendance status. This outreach is simply to keep you fully informed and to ensure our school remains in compliance with state regulations. We appreciate your partnership as we work together to support your student's education.

We have been working hard to understand a new rhythmic chant to align with Goshen PRIDE. If your student is in 2nd through 5th grades, have them show you how to perform this piece!

¡Saludos cordiales desde la clase de mĂºsica! If you didn’t already know, September 15 - October 15 is the time of year we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, featuring songs, games, and activities from Spanish-speaking cultures in every grade to explore musical concepts. You may already have heard your student singing or chanting in Spanish at home!

K, 1 – Mi cuerpo hace mĂºsica

2 – Zapatito blanco, ¿QuiĂ©n es esa gente?

3 – Fray Felipe, Carnivalito

4 – Bidi bidi bom bom, La vida es un carnaval

5 – Al citrĂ³n, Los machetes

Questions to ask your student:

  • How can I greet someone or count in Spanish?

  • Can you remember all the ideas of PRIDE in a musical way? (see picture for details)

  • What are some ways to be positive, respectful, inclusive, determined, and empowered in related arts classes?

Attendance Procedures Attendance Procedures

To report an absence, please call the front office at 614-478-5580 or email mcfaddene@gjps.org by 8:30am if possible.

Due to House Bill 410, student attendance is now calculated in hours. This includes absences that have been identified as both excused and unexcused by the school, as well as planned absences. Being late or tardy to school does calculate into the total hours absent.

In an effort to encourage regular, on-time attendance and avoid habitual truancy, families are encouraged to:

  • Make getting to school on time every day a high priority.

  • Discuss the importance of regular school attendance and the negative impacts of excessive absences.

  • Create a safe space for students to discuss what is keeping them from school.

  • Develop a backup plan for getting your student to school when transportation challenges, illness, or other challenges arise.

  • Schedule vacations during a time when school is not in session.

  • Monitor your student’s attendance records to identify any disruptions or patterns of change.

  • Contact your student’s school to discuss preventative services and supports available to promote regular attendance.

PLANNED ABSENCES (Such as vacation):

The time missed will be counted as an authorized, UNEXCUSED absence but shall not be a factor in determining grades unless the make-up work is not completed. Students who are absent 38 hours in a month or 65 hours in a school year with or without legitimate excuse are now considered Excessively Absent. These students will receive a letter from the District and will be required to follow the District Truancy Plan. These hours include approved planned absences. Planned absences will not be approved if your child has already met or will meet (based on this request) the absence threshold for Excessive Absence and/or Habitual Truancy.

If you have a planned absence, please fill out this form and send it in to the office. For more information or questions, please visit the GJPS website.

If you are visiting Goshen Lane for any reason, you will need to enter the building through the front doors.

We kindly ask that ALL visitors follow the steps below each and every time you visit Goshen Lane:

1. Once at the front, exterior doors of the school, press the buzzer. A member of the office staff will ask your reason for visiting Goshen Lane.

2. Once inside the vestibule, you will enter your drivers' license or state ID into the scanner. ALL visitors/guests/guardians need to scan their drivers license EACH and EVERY time they visit Goshen Lane.

3. Once your license has been scanned and processed you will be permitted to enter the main office area to pick up your visitor/volunteer badge.

**As a reminder, if there is a non-guardian planning to visit Goshen Lane for any reason (visit the bookfair, take your child to an appointment etc.), we ask that the guardian email the teacher and front office (mcfaddene@gjps.org) to let us know prior to the visit.

Background Checks are needed each year for all volunteers!

To increase safety and security protocols, all GJPS volunteers who may have the potential to interact with students in an unsupervised setting or may have access to confidential information will be required to complete an online application that includes a background check. The district will provide the background checks at no cost to the volunteer. Background checks are required EACH school year. If you completed a background check last school year, you will need to complete the process again for the 2025-2026 school year.

EXAMPLES

  • Examples of volunteer experiences include but are not limited to: fundraising volunteers, book fair volunteers, mobile dentist volunteers, etc.
