Why AR?
I often get asked about AR - seems like you either like it or you don't! Let me explain the benefits and why we believe in using it as a way to motivate and encourage your children to read. It's simple - reading improves with more reading. We've tried the reading logs, but it doesn't ensure that children are reading and comprehending what they are reading. AR goals are based on each student's reading ability. Just like in sports, you wouldn't want your child to be practicing with athletes who don't have skills to push them to improve - same with AR. You wouldn't want your child's reading to be significantly below their level. You want them to improve, so they need to practice - just like in sports! Most AR books are a half to a whole point for shorter reads. If you read a story every night before bed, that's 3.5 to 7 points each week! If your child reads higher level books, they are worth more points. The quiz is just to ensure they are understanding the book and the vocabulary of the story- and they can use the book to even look back for answers! Think about that skill...teaching students how to identify key words in questions and locate answers in text is a skill they will need for years to come. Another great thing about AR is you can read alone, read with someone, or listen to a story - it all counts. Plus, students can read about what they are interested in. Yes, we like to expose them to all sorts of genres, but ultimately AR lets students choose their books based on their interests. AR isn't the bad guy, but it gets a lot of negative attention. Let's reframe it this quarter as a positive and easy way to help your child improve their reading and see what happens! If you need help supporting your child in their reading, reach out to us! Your child's teacher or I am more than willing and happy to help.

Broadmoor Dental Screens are on March 27th! Iron Horse Dental will be here to do a "quick peek" at all student's teeth. They will recommend if additional evaluation/treatment is needed. No procedures performed, this is a visual look only.
If you do not want your child to participate in the dental screening, please provide a written/email letter stating that you would like to exclude your student. Emails can be sent to prothec@usd416.org.
Mindset Minute with Mrs. McIntire
Our current Mindset is The Time is Now. The time is now teaches that all of our power is in the moment! We cannot change the past, the future hasn't happened; the only thing we can do is take purposeful action in the present to create the life of our dreams!
The time is now... to set goals and take steps to make them happen. The time is now... to try something new. The time is now... to practice healthy habits. Each of us has the power to use the present to help us take steps towards our future.

Attendance and School Calendars
Receive an Attendance Email from School?
If you receive an attendance letter from school, it is meant to inform you of your student's absences or tardies. This way you can also keep track of the days gone and how to plan ahead to
miss fewer days.
When Your Child Misses School:
One week gone is approximately 7.5 hours of instruction lost in reading and in math. That doesn't include the extra time teachers provide to check for understanding and mastery of concepts so they can move on to the next concept. We see some students really struggle to get caught back up when they've missed extended time. We attempt to make it up during school hours, but your child may be required to stay after school to work with teachers or our tutors.
Please take note of our school calendars when planning your family's vacations.
Attendance is a focus at BES and we want your children at school! It can be very difficult for students to get caught up sometimes when they miss for extended periods of time. For example, when a student misses a week of school, that is up to 450 minutes of math instruction they are missing!
If your family does have a trip planned, we do not provide lessons or materials ahead of those trips. Teachers will work with you to schedule times when your student can be given that instruction and guided work time to ensure mastery of skills. This may have to happen before or after school, but we will also try to work during the school day as well.
GREAT school habits now help prepare students for future success!
