The St. Luke's Journey: Three Divisions, One Mission

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this week's Parent Council Coffee and presentation, "The St. Luke's Journey: Growing Into Who They Are Called to Be." We walked through what a St. Luke's education looks like at every stage, guided by three simple questions: Who is the child now? What do we intentionally do? And who are they becoming? In Early Childhood (PK3–K), the focus is on wonder and curiosity through play, inquiry, and hands-on exploration, helping our youngest learners see themselves as capable and curious from day one. As students move into Elementary (grades 1–4), that same curiosity doesn't disappear; it gains tools. Students progress from exploring to practicing, applying, and eventually owning their learning, building strong academic foundations alongside growing independence and character through scholarship, citizenship, and leadership.

By the time students reach Middle School, they're navigating a very different kind of growth, one filled with changing friendships, new academic rigor, and the work of figuring out who they want to be. We shared some honest reflections on the "tween and teen" years, including insight from author Jessica Speer on how middle schoolers learn to handle peer pressure, social media, and setbacks while defining their identity. We also highlighted the concrete building blocks of the MS program: a structured course progression from grades 5 through 8, academic enrichment classes like Declamations, World Religions, Yearbook, and Personal Finance, memorable class trips (from Camp Capers in 5th grade to Washington, D.C. in 8th), and a robust lineup of clubs from Math Olympiad to Speech & Debate.

What ties it all together is our commitment to knowing each child by name and heart, challenging them with purpose, and calling them forward, so that every stage builds on the last. We're grateful for the parents who came out to learn more about this continuous journey, and we look forward to continuing the conversation throughout the year.

Week 2: Motivation Comes From Within

We all want our children to be motivated, but Lahey reminds us that external rewards and pressure can sometimes replace a child's own motivation. When the focus becomes grades, prizes, praise, or avoiding disappointment, children can lose sight of the joy of learning and accomplishing something for themselves. Instead of asking, “How can I get my child to do this?” try asking, “How can I help my child want to do this?” Giving children appropriate choices and ownership can help build genuine motivation.
