Husky HeadlinesSeptember Newsletter for S-RC Elementary Families
Hello Jr. Husky families! September is here and we are officially two weeks into our school year. Teachers have taught routines, both in the classroom and throughout the school. Last week was our first week with our infamous "Yellow Sheet" - and I'm happy to say that our PAW to yellow sheet ratio was fantastic! So please, make sure you congratulate your child on their ability to CRUSH our routines!! In the first two (and a half) weeks of school, elementary students have earned TWO HUNDRED SIXTY-ONE PAWS!! If your child comes home with a PAW, please make sure you let them know just how awesome it is - and how proud you are of them...because we think it's pretty awesome!

HAL & STEAM

HAL & STEAM classes have already begun for the year. If your child tested in last year, they will continue for the entire first semester. Your child will also have an opportunity to test in during MAP (Measure of Academic Progress) testing that is happening RIGHT NOW!! If your child scores above the 90th percentile, they will be in either HAL or STEAM.

To enter HAL - students would need to score above the 90th percentile on either their reading or language usage test. The reading test is given to K-5 students, language usage is only given to 3-5 students. To enter STEAM - students would need to score above the 90th percentile on either their math or science test. The math test is given to K-5 students, science is only given to 5th grade students.

If you ever have any questions, please reach out to Mrs. Cromer or Ms. Thompson

Counselor's Corner

The school year is off to an AWESOME start! My name is Mrs. Zelasney and I am the Elementary School Counselor here at S-RC! In the month of September we will be focusing on Growth Mindset, Decision Making and Goal Setting in Guidance Class. This is a fun way for students to reflect on all their talents and look forward into the future!

When will I be in your student's classroom?

Monday: Kindergarten and 3rd Grade

Tuesday: 2nd Grade and 1st Grade

Wednesday: 5th Grade

Thursday: 4th Grade

Each month we will have a "Book of the Month" where I read a book that reflects on Social-Emotional Literacy. We will discuss the story and have a fun project to go with it. The book for September will be "Taste Your Words" by Bonnie Clark.

Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child: mzelasney@shelby.esu7.org

Why Read???

Did you know that if your child reads 20 minutes per day statistics say that they will score higher on standardized tests? Crazy, right?? If your child starts reading 20 minutes per day in kindergarten they will have read for an equivalent of 60 school days by the end of 6th grade! If they only read for 5 minutes a day they will have read for an equivalent of 12 school days. A student who only reads one minute a day at home will have only read for an equivalent of 3 school days. That's a HUGE difference!!

My challenge for students (and for parents), is the 20 minute challenge!! Each night, I challenge students to read, listen to audio books, or even listen to another reader for 20 minutes. Let's come together to encourage our next generation to explore their imagination and learn through literature! Let's get them READING!!

Nebraska READS

In 2019, the state of Nebraska passed The NebraskaREADS initiative. It supports policies and practices outlined in the Nebraska Reading Improvement Act which went into effect during the 2019-2020 school year. The law takes a comprehensive approach to improve early literacy skills in students who are in Kindergarten through 3rd grade. This basically means that schools are required to make individual reading plans for any student who is not reading AT GRADE LEVEL if they are in Kindergarten through 3rd grade.

The Nebraska Reading Improvement Act also requires schools to inform parents if their child is not reading at grade level at the beginning of the school year. Please know that letters will be coming out soon to let K-3 parents know if your child tested below grade level. This communication is only to meet the requirements of the Nebraska Reading Improvement Act. If your child's teacher has not contacted you directly, please do not get overly concerned if you receive a letter. However, if you have a question, do not hesitate to contact me.

S-RC Library Tid-Bits (part 2)

Your SRC Husky Library is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month by reading aloud bilingual books and practicing Spanish and English words for things found around the library. Check out @SRCHuskyLibrary on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter to see what we're up to and expand your own vocabulary.

If you have any leftover crafting paper, bottle caps, crayon bits, or Altoid tins, please send them to the library. We have plans to upcycle these items!!!
