Pet Therapy With MacGyver

This week we welcomed a new therapy dog named MacGyver. MacGyver is Barnabas’s nephew, and it’s clear that sweetness runs in the family. Several students visited with MacGyver in the Cheetah Den, and then MacGyver began visiting classrooms. He spread love and joy wherever he went all afternoon. If he didn’t make it to your student’s room this week, he’ll be there soon! MacGyver will be with us every other Wednesday, and he’ll make his way around the building each time he visits.

Looking for ways to support your mathematician at home? Look no further! Bridges in Mathematics offers various digital tools directly aligned to our curriculum which can support learning outside of the school day.

Math At Home is a free website filled with fun daily math activities, family activities, and online games. Activities are organized by grade and mathematical content. For each activity, there is an option to have the equation read aloud to your child as well as a printable option if you’d prefer.

The Math Learning Center offers free apps that are based on the visual models used in Bridges in Mathematics. All apps can be used on a computer or an iOS device. You can click ‘learn more’ about the app before your mathematician engages with it. This explains what the model is and allows you to watch a tutorial of how to use the app. There are also activities that directly align to the visual models that can be used for additional practice. The activities can be sorted by grade, topic and app.

Library News

Hi Cheetah families!

It has been a busy month in the Memorial School library! Students have been practicing their library skills each week and are becoming more independent library users.

See below for grade level classroom expectations.

  • PreK students are enjoying a variety of read alouds and songs with the themes of fall, apples, and pumpkins.

  • Kindergarten is working on discussing the role of the author and the illustrator. We have read This is My Book by Mark Pett and More Bears by Kenn Nesitt and have done several sorts and songs to aid in this discussion.

  • First grade is learning about the elements of a story (characters, setting, problem/solution) and practicing making predictions while we are reading and then revising those predictions as we read. Over the past few weeks we have read The Library Dragon by Carmen Agra Deedy, Give Me Back My Book by Ethan Long, and Nannette’s Baguette by Mo Willems.

  • Second grade has started learning how to use the library catalog, performing searches and identifying the call number of a book and whether it is checked in or out of the library. They have also been introduced to Typing Club which is a keyboarding program they will be using up through 5th grade. In addition second graders have begun listening to our first Nutmeg Nominee, Just Harriet by Elana K. Arnold.

  • Third grade is reviewing using the library catalog and using Typing Club. We are also doing a deep dive into our library shelves and learning all about the Dewey Decimal System. In addition third graders have begun listening to our first Nutmeg Nominee, Just Harriet by Elana K. Arnold.

You can find more information on our library web page located on the school website (http://easthamptonps.org). Questions, contact Mrs. Flannery at rflannery@easthamptonct.org.

Happy Reading,

Mrs. Flannery

Library Media Specialist

Students have interacted with a variety of different “Exploration Stations” over the past few weeks, making connections with the books we read and the world around them.

Notes From The Nurse Notes From The Nurse

Reminders

We want to share some guidelines that are helpful for families:

Please let us know if your child is diagnosed with any illness or injury (such as strep, flu, pink eye, fracture/broken bone, lice, pneumonia, covid, etc.) as the nurse office tracks illnesses and sends notification letters home if there are 2 or more cases in a specific classroom. Please be specific with any of the symptoms your child is experiencing.

Consider keeping your child at home for an extra day of rest and observation if he or she has any of the following symptoms:

  • Very stuffy or runny nose and/or cough

  • Mild sore throat (no fever, no known exposure to strep)

  • Mild headache and/or stomachache

  • Fatigue

Definitely keep your child at home for treatment and observation if he or she has any of these symptoms:

  • Fever (100.4 degrees or higher. May only return to school after 24 hours of no fever WITHOUT fever reducing medications)

  • Vomiting (Even once. Must wait 24 hours after last vomit episode to return to school)

  • Diarrhea (may return to school after 24 hours since last episode)

  • Chills

  • General malaise or feelings of fatigue, discomfort, weakness, and/or muscle aches

  • Frequent congested, wet, or croupy cough

  • Lots of nasal congestion with frequent blowing of nose

Please remind your child(ren) about good hygiene habits:

  • Wash hands frequently

  • Do not touch eyes, nose, or mouth

  • Cover mouth and nose when sneezing/coughing and then wash hands

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick

Often when a child awakens with vague complaints (the way colds and flu begin) it is wise to observe your child at home for an hour or two before deciding whether or not to bring them to school. Your child should be physically able to participate in all school activities on returning to school. Keeping a sick child at home will minimize the spread of infections and viruses in the classroom. Please send in a copy of the doctor’s clearance, as needed. Thank you in advance for helping to make this year at school as healthy as possible.

Medications

Every medication that is brought into school requires a “Medication Authorization” form to be signed by the student’s doctor and parent/guardian and the medication in original packaging with prescription label is to be brought in by a parent/guardian, not in the child’s backpack. No child may carry their own medications at the Elementary level. Please use a large ziplock bag for the medication plus the medication order, and label the bag with your child’s name before dropping off. Any controlled medications will need to be counted and signed off with the RN and parent so please allow for a few extra minutes at drop off.

Please note: COUGH DROPS count as medications and are not allowed in school. All over-the-counter medications also need a medication order from your provider.

Food

We have several students with severe food allergies, therefore we highly recommend non food items to share for birthday celebrations. Per our food sharing protocol, we ask for at least 48 hours advance notice to check for classroom allergies. Please inform your child’s teacher AND the nurse in order to approve food being brought in to share. A great resource for allergy free snacks is the Safe Snack guide at https://snacksafely.com/safe-snack-guide/. We appreciate your assistance in keeping our school safe.

Health Concerns

If your child has a new health concern which you would like to speak to the nurse about e-mail kwilliams@easthamptonct.org and mlemire@easthamptonct.org at any time.

If you have any specific concerns that arise during the school year (such as stitches, concussions, broken bones/fractures, etc) it is best that you send in a doctor’s note with dates, guidelines and restrictions, so we can all be on the same page and keep your child safe.

Respectfully,

Katie Williams, RN

and Ms. Michelle Lemire

Get S.M.A.R.T About Social Media and Technology Get S.M.A.R.T About Social Media and Technology

On Wednesday, October 15th, East Hampton Public Schools, along with the support of the PTO, will be hosting an informative session for K-12 caregivers on Social Media And Responsible Technology (S.M.A.R.T).

Scott Driscoll, of Internet Safety Concepts, spent most of his 33-year career in law enforcement as a youth officer with a local Connecticut police department. Scott’s work reinforced his desire to inform people how they can protect themselves from the potential dangers of technology in an ever-increasingly connected world. Scott founded Internet Safety Concepts in 2007 with the goal of educating people with a clear message: if we don’t consider safety while we are online and using technology, we can put ourselves and others in danger.

This will be an adult event. However, the EHHS’ Interact Club will provide childcare in the High School Library.

The EHHS Interact Club will be hosting a Walk of Hope again this year. A table will be set up in the lobby during our Open House evenings. East Hampton teachers, staff, students, and community members are invited to support cancer research and care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund. We are proud to honor our staff, students, and family members who are fighting and beating cancer, as well as walk in memory of those beloved community members who have lost their battle. The entire community is invited to join us in celebrating and honoring all those impacted by cancer. On Tuesday, October 14th from 5:00-7:30, the East Hampton High School track will serve as a place for us to come together, walking and running side by side in a shared spirit of remembrance, support, and hope. With your donation, the Interact Club will create a luminaria bag(s) to light the track the night of the walk in honor of your loved ones. Please complete a form for each person you would like us to honor. If you prefer to donate by check, you can drop off or mail checks to Elaine Pellegrino at the Board of Education Office, 1 Community Drive, Suite 1, East Hampton, CT 06424. Questions?
