SCHOOL BOARD POLICY CODE: 3420 Student Promotion and Accountability

The superintendent shall develop (1) proposed promotion standards and (2) a process to be used in determining a student's readiness to progress to the next level of study and shall submit the standards and process to the board for approval. The standards will be based, in part, upon proficiency in reading. The standards and process must provide multiple criteria for assessing a student's readiness to progress to the next level of study, such as standardized test scores, formative and diagnostic assessments, grades, a portfolio or anthology of the student's work, and, when appropriate, accepted standards for assessing developmental growth. The standards and process will incorporate all state law and State Board of Education policy requirements, including those for the assessment and promotion of third grade students as described in G.S. 115C-83.6 et seq. and State Board of Education Policies GCS-J-002 and -003.

The promotion standards will also require that students not be promoted from eighth grade until a career development plan is completed in accordance with the requirements of G.S. 115C-158.10 and State Board of Education rules and not be promoted from tenth grade until the career development plan is revised. Any high school students who does not already have a career development plan must complete the plan within 90 days of enrollment in school. Career development plans must be easily accessible to students and parents.

Principals shall ensure that the promotion standards are used by teachers and school administrators in assessing each student's readiness to progress to the next level of study. Principals have the authority to promote or retain students based upon the standards approved by the board and any applicable standards set by the State Board of Education.

Be The Person You Want Your Kids To Be!

Kids of all ages are like sponges and they are learning from you even when you don’t realize it. Parents model behaviors to their children every day and children learn how to behave (good and bad) by how their parents behave. Think about what you are modeling to your children and decide what behaviors you want from your kids. Parents are a huge influence on their children!

Do you spend time reading for fun? Do you limit your own screen time?

Do you keep your belongings organized and prepare for the next day or week ahead?

Do you take care of yourself by exercising, eating right, and keeping good sleep habits?

How do you speak to or about other people? How do you speak to your children?

How do you treat others who are different from you? Do you care about the health and safety of others?

Do you model respect and kindness? How do you show it?

🌍 6th Grade Social Studies Update!

Wrapping Up the School Year!

✅ What We Learned: African Kingdoms

Over the past few weeks, students explored the rich history and culture of Ancient African Kingdoms such as Ghana, Mali, and Songhai.
We examined:

  • The importance of gold-salt trade routes

  • The role of powerful leaders like Mansa Musa

  • Contributions in education, art, and religion

  • The influence of Islam and oral traditions like griots

Ask your student: What made Mansa Musa so famous?

🔎 What We’re Learning Now: Eurasia in the Middle Ages

Our current unit focuses on Eurasia during the Middle Ages—a fascinating time of castles, knights, and kingdoms!
We’re learning about:

  • The rise and fall of feudalism

  • Daily life in medieval Europe

  • The significance of the Black Death, Crusades, and Magna Carta

  • Cultural exchange between Europe and Asia

🚀 What’s Next: Final Project, EOGs, and Summer Fun

As we near the end of the school year, here’s what’s coming up:

📚 GRAPES Final Project

Students will work in teams to create a final presentation using GRAPES (Geography, Religion, Achievements, Politics, Economics, and Social Structure) to present in front of the class by talking about one of the civilizations we’ve studied this year.

SCIENCE with MS. TJULKINA:

Dear Parents/Guardians,

As we approach the end of the school year, I want to thank you for your continued support and involvement in your child’s education. It has been a pleasure watching each student grow in knowledge and confidence throughout the year.

We are currently reviewing key science concepts in preparation for our end-of-year assessment. The upcoming test will cover:

Earth’s Plates and Tectonic Plate Movement

Igneous Rocks

Sedimentary Rocks

To help students succeed, I’ve included a simple study guide below. We encourage you to review it together and help your child find time to study a little each day. Consistent review and practice will build confidence and help them feel prepared for test on the 26 of May. All late assignments will be due on May 30.

Let’s finish the year strong!

Ms. T

Student Study Guide – Earth Science Review

1. Earth’s Plates / Plate Tectonics

The Earth’s outer shell is divided into tectonic plates.

Plates float on the mantle and move very slowly.

Movement can cause earthquakes, volcanoes, and mountain formation.

Plate boundaries

Divergent – plates move apart; Convergent – plates move toward each other; Transform – plates slide past one another

2. Tectonic Plate Movement (a.k.a. “Swift Movement”)

Though slow, the movement of plates has big effects.

These movements explain continental drift and seafloor spreading.

The speed is about 2 to 5 cm per year – about as fast as your fingernails grow!

3. Igneous Rocks

Formed when magma cools and hardens.

Two types:

Intrusive (formed underground – large crystals)

Extrusive (formed from lava – small or no crystals)

Examples: Granite, Basalt, Obsidian

4. Sedimentary Rocks

Formed from layers of sediments being compacted over time.

Often contain fossils.

Made from broken pieces of rocks, sand, or shells.

Examples: Limestone, Sandstone, Shale

SOCIAL STUDIES with MR. JONES:

Dear Parents and Guardians,

In Social Studies, we are currently covering some key events of the Cold War era, including the Korean War, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the Vietnam War. These topics are essential in helping students understand the complex global dynamics of the 20th century. As EOG tests are scheduled for next week, it is crucial that students come prepared every day with their materials and are ready to engage in class. Additionally, as we approach the end of the school year, we encourage all students to stay focused and finish strong. Maintaining good academic standing is especially important for those who wish to remain eligible for sports participation next year. Your support in reinforcing these expectations at home is greatly appreciated.

SCIENCE with MS. BRACKETT:

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We will continue our unit on Body Systems through the end of the school year.

So far, we have completed and had quizzes on the following topics:

  • The respiratory system

  • Mean, median, and mode in the context of the respiratory system

  • The circulatory system

Students were allowed to use their Review Notes during quizzes. Those who completed their notes generally performed better than those who did not.

We have now begun studying the excretory system, which focuses on how the body removes waste and maintains internal balance. This system includes organs such as the kidneys, bladder, ureters, and urethra. Students are learning how these organs work together to filter the blood, remove excess water, and eliminate waste products from the body.

Next week, students will take a test on the entire Body Systems unit. They will be allowed to use their completed Review Notes packet during the test. Please encourage your student to complete their notes thoroughly. Students who copy answers from Google instead of using classroom materials will be penalized.

Please remind your student to:

  • Pay close attention in class

  • Complete their Review Notes packet

  • Prepare for the upcoming test

Additionally, two homework assignments have been posted on my Canvas page. Please ensure your student completes these assignments by the due dates.

Thank you for your continued support of your student’s learning!

Sincerely,
Ms. Brackett

MATH with MS. JENKINS:

Hello FMS Families. The seventh-grade math students are doing a great job as we approach the end of the school year. We have spent the last two weeks learning about theoretical and experimental probability. Students are using their understanding of probability to make predictions. Students have learned to determine whether an event is independent or dependent. This week, we will focus on writing out the sample space for a simple chance experiment.

This is our second week of Math remediation. We are reviewing previously tested questions together. Please encourage your student to review the learned material at home. They will continue to have access to IXL as we approach the EOG exams. I have given the students resources in class to use at home for extra support.

Maths Is Fun!

Science EOG - June 3rd

Please ensure your child is well rested and has a nutritious breakfast on test day so they can perform their best.

Ongoing Remediation

We have been providing in-class remediation all last week and will continue daily through June 2nd to support student success.

Vocabulary Practice with Gimkit

Students have access to a Gimkit containing the entire year’s vocabulary. This is a great tool for extra practice anytime at home or school.

Chromebook Preparedness

It is essential that students come to school each day with a fully charged, working Chromebook to maximize learning during these final weeks.

Individual Goal Setting

I have met with each student individually to set personalized goals and discuss strategies to prepare effectively for the EOG. We have also reviewed the grade-level average and set clear targets for the upcoming test.

Post-EOG Plans

After the EOG, we will complete our final SEL module to support students’ social and emotional growth as the year wraps up.

Looking Ahead

The end of the school year is near—let’s stay focused for just a few more weeks! Summer break is right around the corner, offering a well-deserved rest.

A Note of Gratitude

It has been an honor teaching your students in both 6th and 8th grade. I’ve witnessed their growth from the start of middle school to mature 8th graders ready for high school. Though this moment is bittersweet, I am incredibly proud of their perseverance and achievements.

SOCIAL STUDIES with MR. DOWNUM:

We are almost there, we have made it to the end. There is a lot going on in the next three weeks and it will go by pretty quickly.

5/19-5/23- We are on a remediation schedule. The kids are going to every classroom and practicing for the EOG’s. Each class is doing remediation for the subject they teach, so this is very targeted practice for the students. This should be really helpful for them. Please make sure the kids are coming in with charged chrome books, this is imperative for remediation week.

5/27-5/30- This is EOG week. These tests are an important factor in the kids' retention. We need to see growth from the kids. It would be great if all students were proficient, but what we really need to see is that they got better than at the beginning of the year. I have faith that the kids are going to knock it out of the park. We have been crushing it all year and I see nothing changing that now. Please ensure that the kids are getting enough sleep, eating a good breakfast, and have a charged Chromebook. 5/28-ELA EOG, 5/29- Math EOG, 6/3-Science EOG

6/2-6/6- This week will have the science EOG on Tuesday. For the rest of the week this will be retesting for the EOGS. This is for students who did not pass the EOGs on the first attempt. If the student passed the EOG they cannot take it again to get a better score. Please be on the lookout for the schedule for retests.

The last day of the school year is on the 10th. We will have our moving up ceremony in the morning, after which you are welcome to take the kids home and they are done for the year.

I want to take this opportunity to tell you all that it was a pleasure to teach your children this year. It wasn’t always easy, but overall it was a great year.

MATH with MS. CUNNINGHAM:

I can’t believe we are so close to the finish line! 8th graders worked hard last week and continue this week during math remediation time. Remediation is set for Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 9:30am. Please make sure that your child is at school on time to make the most use of this time. We are working on equations and expressions, number system, geometry to include transformations, parallel lines and transversals, scatter plots, functions, utilizing desmos calculator, and math vocabulary. Please encourage your students to take this time seriously as it is meant to help them. The more they put into their remediation groups, the more they will get out of it.

Math EOG testing date is Thursday, May 29th- Parents, please make sure that your child is at school on time and ready to test. Start a few nights ahead, but make sure your child is getting a FULL night’s sleep, getting to bed on time. Students should be sure to eat a good breakfast that contains protein so they don’t get hungry while testing, maybe eggs, toast, sausage or ham and some fruit. Students come to school with a fully charged chromebook for testing. Please encourage your child to try their best on the test, not to rush and not to just randomly put any letter/number as their answer just to be finished. Encourage him/her to show all they have learned this year!

In class, we are finishing up our last unit learning about the Pythagorean Theorem and the volume of cones, cylinders, and spheres.

EOG Review:

I have posted links for math vocabulary review on canvas for each unit that we have completed. It would be beneficial for each student to spend some time reviewing that vocabulary each night between now and math EOG day, which is scheduled for Thursday, May 29th. There are also many links under Math EOG Review including reference sheets and activities that would be beneficial to look over.

I was impressed with the growth that I saw on the EOY Exact Path math diagnostic test from students last week. I am eagerly anticipating seeing their EOG scores and celebrating their hard work. Please encourage your students to do their very best on each of their EOG tests, as summer school is not an option this year. Showing growth is very important!

There are many missing assignments, please check powerschool often. If your child completes an assignment that is still open, he/she should email me to let me know that it is completed so I can enter their grade.

Parents, we need your help—----Students need to be bringing a charged chromebook to school each day. Students should not be using their chromebooks to charge other devices, as this ruins the battery. Students are not to be using their devices while it is charging, so we need the chromebooks coming to school fully charged and ready to go for the day. Please remind your child to charge their chromebook each and every night and be sure to bring it to school each and every day.

Thank you for supporting us this year. If you have any questions, please email me at michellecunningham@fcschools.net

ART with Mrs. CLIFTON:

What a YEAR we have had!! I am so very proud of all my students! The county art show will be held at Lumpkin Gallery, Louisburg College, JPAC. There will be a floating reception from 5:00-6:15pm with the Awards Ceremony at 5:45pm. I will be sending out information if your child has artwork on display.

We are coming to the end of the year! But we have 1 more performance before the year closes out. We will be participating in the 8th Grade Celebration on June 10th.

6th and 7th grades will play the music as the 8th graders walk in and out of the ceremony. The 8th graders will perform their chosen song for this year Bang Bang! This is very exciting since I believe this is the first time the band will participate in the 8th grade celebration.

For the rest of the year the students will be working on the following - but not limited too

8th Grade: - Will get exposed to 2 new time signatures Cut time and 6/8 time. We will also have a new technique handout to begin during tuning and warm up times and we will begin a new scale called the Chromatic scale in 1 octave. And will continue to play through Bang Bang for the 8th Grade Celebration

6th and 7th Grade: Will also begin with the new technique handout during warm ups and the new scale Chromatic scale in 1 octave. The grades will be combined for the 8th grade celebration and will begin working on short excerpts of two pieces called “Trumpet Voluntary” for the processional and the “Victory March” for the recessional. They will begin to understand the time signature of 2/4 time. Review repeats with 1st and 2nd endings. Playing as a duet and watching for cues for the cut off of the music after repeating the selections several times.

Missing work! - If any practice log or the project “Careers in Music” is not complete please find them in Canvas and complete them as soon as possible to receive a grade for the assignments. Everything can still be handed in. Parents please encourage your student to complete all missing assignments.

Paxton Patterson Career Labs:

As we approach the conclusion of our current modules, students will have the opportunity to synthesize their online learning experiences and demonstrate their newfound skills in the lab. This hands-on application will not only solidify their understanding but also allow them to showcase their capabilities in a practical environment.

Following this, I will conduct an insightful exit interview with each class. During this discussion, I am eager to hear what aspects of the modules resonated with them the most, as well as any challenges they encountered. Additionally, I will invite their thoughts on improvements and new ideas they would like to see incorporated into future lab sessions. This feedback will be invaluable in enhancing our curriculum and ensuring it meets their needs and interests.

Let’s look forward to an engaging transition from theory to practice!

Computer Science Discoveries 1 and 2:

CS 1:

Exciting Two-Week Programming Challenge!

As we wrap up the term, we are thrilled to announce a two-week programming adventure designed for our ahead-of-schedule class. During this immersive experience, students will dive into the world of game development in our state-of-the-art game lab.

They will explore essential coding functions and techniques, empowering them to create their very own games from scratch. This hands-on project not only fosters creativity but also enhances problem-solving skills and technical proficiency.

If time allows, students will have the fantastic opportunity to showcase their creations to school leaders, offering a platform for them to demonstrate their hard work and innovation. Let's gear up for an inspiring and educational two weeks of coding fun!

CS 2:

As we wrap up Unit 3 in our class, students will have the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding through a post-unit exam. This will not only assess their knowledge but also serve as a platform for them to express their creativity. Each student will present a game concept they envision creating in the future, detailing its unique features and exciting elements.

In addition to the exam, I encourage everyone to think outside the box and incorporate innovative ideas—what special abilities, graphics, or interactive components would elevate their game experience? This is a chance for students to showcase their imagination and passion for game design. I look forward to seeing the diverse concepts and thoughtful designs that emerge from this project!

Keyboarding Skills and Basic Word Processing:

As we conclude our Word Document Processing module, students will have the opportunity to showcase their skills and creativity. They will apply everything they have learned thus far to produce a polished formal document, including beautifully designed invitations that reflect their unique style.

This is not just a task; it's a celebration! Each student will create a special invitation for their families, inviting them to join in congratulating their accomplishment of a fantastic school year. Emphasis will be placed on proper formatting, font selection, and overall presentation, ensuring that each invitation stands out as a testament to their hard work and dedication.

Let’s make this a memorable experience as we celebrate our achievements together!
