Tips to Manage Holiday Stress For Teens and Families
1. Keep realistic expectations.
Not every holiday moment will be movie-perfect. Focus on small joys rather than trying to make everything ideal.
2. Take breaks from family chaos.
If things get overwhelming, it’s okay to step away for a bit. Go for a walk, listen to music, or spend some quiet time alone to recharge.
3. Stay connected to friends.
If you’re missing your usual routine or feeling isolated, reach out to friends with a quick message or FaceTime.
4. Maintain some routines.
Keeping up with sleep, hydration, and exercise helps balance holiday stress.
5. Manage social media time.
It’s easy to compare your holidays to others’ highlight reels. Remember, most people only share the best parts.
6. Budget your time and money.
If you’re working or buying gifts, plan ahead. A handmade gift or note often means more than something expensive.
7. Give back.
Volunteering or helping someone else can shift your focus from stress to gratitude.
8. Communicate your needs.
If family situations are tense or expectations feel heavy, talk to a trusted adult or friend about how you’re feeling.
9. Practice gratitude .
Take a few moments each day to notice what’s going right, no matter how small.
10. Be kind to yourself.
You don’t have to be cheerful all the time. It’s normal to have mixed feelings during the holidays. Joy, sadness, excitement, or stress can all coexist.
If you or a loved one has a mental health emergency over the break, please call 911 or refer to this link: LANEY MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCES
