Evergreen 5th Graders Experience Outdoor School at Camp Kirby Evergreen 5th Graders Experience Outdoor School at Camp Kirby

Evergreen Elementary School’s fifth grade students spent last week immersed in nature at Camp Kirby on beautiful Samish Island for their annual Outdoor School experience. Led by teachers Erin Brumbaugh, Brittny Dillon, and Shameem Sherwin, with support from paraeducators and parent volunteers, students enjoyed hands-on science lessons, team-building activities, and plenty of outdoor fun.

The experience offered students the chance to connect classroom learning with the natural world—and to make unforgettable memories along the way.

Special thanks to Science teacher Shameem Sherwin for sharing photos and highlights from the trip!

Students really did find the adventure in everything at Camp Kirby.

Evergreen Elementary 6th graders took their learning into the field during a recent science trip to Padilla Bay. Students conducted transect surveys of the mudflats, identifying and counting species as part of a hands-on ecosystem study. Their data was graphed and documented by Padilla Bay staff for ongoing research. A highlight of the trip came when student Ethan Freeman discovered the molt of a European Green Crab—an invasive species the Department of Ecology and WDFW are closely monitoring. Thanks to Ethan’s sharp eyes, specialists were alerted, and additional trapping efforts are now likely in the area!

Learn How SUN Bucks Can Help Your Family! Learn How SUN Bucks Can Help Your Family!

SUN Bucks is a grocery benefits program to help families buy food during the summer when schools are closed. Families get $120 for each eligible school-age child. Children who get these benefits can still participate in other summer meal programs.

How does SUN Bucks work?

In Washington, SUN Bucks benefits are loaded onto SUN Bucks EBT cards for each eligible child and mailed to your home. SUN Bucks benefits can be used to buy food like fruits, vegetables, meat, whole grains and dairy at grocery stores, farmers markets, and other places that accept Women, Infants and Children or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program EBT benefits. SUN Bucks is a convenient way to help children get the nutrition they need when schools are closed.

Is my child eligible for SUN Bucks?

Your child is eligible for SUN Bucks if:

  • Your household already participates in Temporary Assistance for Needy Families or SNAP and your child is age 8-18 years old OR
  • Your child attends a school that offers the National School Lunch or School Breakfast Program and your household income meets the requirements for free or reduced-price school meals. You may submit a Child Nutrition Eligibility and Education Benefit application at your school to find out if you qualify for free or reduced-price meals.

How do I enroll my child in SUN Bucks?

Many families get SUN Bucks automatically if they are getting other benefits, but some families may need to apply.

Do I need to fill out an application?

If your household already participates in TANF or SNAP, your child will be automatically enrolled in SUN Bucks and you will not need to fill out an application. If your child is automatically eligible, watch for the SUN Bucks EBT card in the mail.

If you are not automatically enrolled and believe your children are eligible, you can apply for SUN Bucks.

How do I apply for SUN Bucks?

Visit sunbucks.dshs.wa.gov to apply.

When applying, you will be asked to provide your child’s name, school, date of birth, address and household income. You will not need to provide any other documents or information at the time of application but may be required to provide additional verification prior to benefits being issued.
