KEY NEWS FOR EXPLORER FAMILIES
Wow! What an amazing PTA Family Night we had a week ago! The activities, food, fun, goodies, and overall festive evening was highlighted by perfect weather. A huge thank you to our PTA, and Mrs. Van Sant and her team, for the organization. It was truly a night where our Northwood school family shined.
Thursday and Friday of this week were spent sneaking in extra DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) time when possible! Students read to one another, listened to read alouds, and found time to enjoy their books outdoors in the fall air! Northwood is on its way to reach the Beanstack challenge!
Our community has another opportunity to support this amazing school through our upcoming Boosterthon event. Led by the Northwood Foundation, our Northwood Explorer Fun Run week will kick off on Tuesday, October 21, and end with the Fun Run on Thursday, October 30 (rain date Nov 3). A schedule of the grade level run times will be included in the next BEST newsletter. This year, more of every dollar raised stays right here at Northwood. The Northwood Foundation has updated how they run the fundraiser so that your support goes even further - directly benefiting our students, classrooms, and programs. Past contributions have supported the book vending machine, kindergarten bootcamp experience, classroom and school-wide enhancements, overall campus beautification, professional development opportunities, curriculum resources and much more. You can start your support early by signing up at mybooster.com. Thank you for helping us make a bigger impact this year!
I hope the fall break is enjoyed by all! Don’t forget to find time to read, too!
With gratitude,
Heather Q. Rucker, principal
ART WITH MS. KATZIN
It's autumn in the Art Room! Northwood artists are learning about landscapes, warm and cool colors, and texture. Students apply these skills through drawing, painting, and collage. Second graders Jorge, Zaynab, Henry, and Myra proudly display their fall farm landscapes in the photo above. Ask your young artist about their current art project to learn more!
THERE IS STILL TIME TO ORDER FROM ART TO REMEMBER
Northwood is participating in a creative fundraiser with Art to Remember that allows you to purchase keepsake products customized with your child's art. There are over 60 products and many are less than $20. These make great gifts and a percentage of every purchase goes right back to the Northwood art program. CLICK HERE and search for your child's artwork. Then, have fun shopping! Thank you for supporting art class at Northwood!

CLINIC NEWS: HAND, FOOT, AND MOUTH DISEASE
Statewide we have seen an increase in the number of Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) cases. HFMD, which is predominantly caused by the Coxsackie virus, is a common childhood viral illness and is generally mild.
About HFMD
The illness often begins with a mild fever, decreased appetite, sore throat, and general feelings of being unwell. One to two days after the fever starts, painful mouth sores may appear — often beginning as small red spots that can blister and form ulcers. These sores are typically found on the tongue, gums, and inside the cheeks. A skin rash may also develop within 1–2 days, presenting as flat or slightly raised red spots, sometimes with blisters. The rash is usually not itchy and is most often seen on the palms, soles of the feet, and sometimes the buttocks. Some children may have only this rash, only mouth sores, or both.
Treatment & Prevention
There is no specific treatment for HFMD. Care focuses on relieving symptoms such as fever, aches, and mouth discomfort. Avoiding close contact — such as kissing, hugging, and sharing cups or utensils—with infected individuals can help prevent the spread. If your child develops symptoms of HFMD, please contact your healthcare provider and notify the school. Your child should remain at home until they have been fever-free for at least 24 hours without fever-reducing medicine and evaluated by a healthcare provider as needed.
If you have questions or concerns, please reach out to our Cluster Nurse, Jayna Brosmer RN at 404-625-6171.
DIGITAL CITZENSHIP LESSONS
In the Media Center, students have been learning about how to be safe, responsible, and respectful online. All students in grades K-5 have completed Digital Citizenship lessons from Common Sense Media on the following topics:
- Healthy Habits
- Privacy and Safety
- Cyberbullying and Online Harm
- Information and Media Literacy
As students spend more time online — whether for learning, socializing, or entertainment — parents play a key role in reinforcing positive digital habits at home. By staying informed about topics like online safety, screen time, cyberbullying, and media literacy, parents can support their children in making smart choices and becoming responsible digital citizens.
For conversation starters and family tips, please visit the resources linked above, including Common Sense Media’s Family Tech Planners and Tips & Resources page. These tools are designed to inspire meaningful conversations about technology use within your family.
THINK FIRST & STAY SAFE PROGRAM
We all share a common and critical goal for our children to be safe and protected from all things harmful. In support of this goal, elementary students in Fulton County Schools will soon receive annual lessons designed to increase their personal safety & protection.
The Think First & Stay Safe™ program is a research-based program that teaches specific personal safety education by way of interactive classroom lessons, classroom posters, role-plays and corresponding activities. Think First & Stay Safe™ enables students to take an active and necessary role in protecting themselves from harassment, abduction, bullying, exploitation, and various forms of abuse (physical, sexual, emotional). The Health Advisory Committee reviewed and approved this program and selected components will be implemented as part of the elementary curriculum.
AVID GOAL OF THE WEEK
Northwood is proud to be an AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) school. AVID Elementary equips students with the foundational skills and mindset needed for future success. Our staff is focused on enhancing instructional consistency, fostering a college and career readiness mindset, increasing student engagement and building organizational and study skills.
As part of this, each week Northwood will be focused on one goal as a school. Be sure to ask your child about it!
Next week’s (October 20) AVID goal is: My goal is to not brag if I win and not be angry if I lose.
CAFETERIA NEWS
NEW CAFETERIA PRINCIPAL ACCOUNT FUND
This year, with the new lunch system, our school community has the capability to create a Cafeteria Principal Account Fund. This account would be used to fulfill any meal costs for students that reach an account balance of zero. We often have families and extended family members that ask if or how they can pay off lunch balances or support our students in this way, now the process of doing so is easy!
Should you be interested in adding to the Cafeteria Principal Account Fund, just send a check or cash to school in an envelope to Ms. Juana Moore, our regional supervisor and interim cafeteria manager, and notate that the funds go to the Principal Fund. Please reach out to Ms. Moore, moorejr@fultonschools.org, if you have any questions.
