Principal Update
Greetings Pike Lake Families,
It has been a great fall at Pike Lake! We are continually impressed with how much the students have grown from the first days of the year. Our teachers and support staff have shared dozens of stories with me about the amazing things they are seeing academically and socially. It brings us a lot of joy to see kids making friends in class and responding to all of the great teaching they have throughout the day.
In November, teachers will host in-person conferences and we really want everyone to participate. Please log into ParentVue to find a time that works for you on either November 5 or November 10. As always, if there is a time that doesn't work for you, please reach out to the teacher to find a time that does work for you.
Please plan ahead for the approaching cold weather. A school full of kindergarten-age children creates a lot of lost and found items that all look similar. Please label all belongings so any misplaced items can get back to your child. Label snow pants, coats, hats, gloves/mittens and boots at a minimum. It is a good idea to also label sweatshirts and hoodies because those are the most common articles filling up the Lost and Found area. As a reminder, students go out for recess EVERY day unless it is raining too hard, or the windchill and temperature combination are out of our threshold. If the air temperature is below 0 degrees or the windchill is colder than 10 degrees below zero, recess will be held indoors.
All the best,
Todd

District News
Making screen time more meaningful
- Is less screen time the only approach?
- How can schools improve the quality of screen time?
- Can screen time be justified if it has a meaningful impact on learning?
This fall, Mounds View Public Schools will consider these issues and more as it convenes a steering committee to provide recommendations to the School Board. Throughout the school year, the group will solicit community feedback and look at four main areas related to educational technology.
- Developing screen time usage guidelines
- Creating an AI usage framework
- Considering laptop and device monitoring tools
- Defining active and passive use of technology

Labeling Student's Belongings
Please remember to label all of your child's things with their first and last name! This includes:
- Jackets
- Sweatshirts
- Hats and mittens or gloves
- Snow pants
- Backpacks
- Water bottles
- Lunchboxes
Ways to label:
- Permanent or fabric marker
- Masking tape
- Custom labels or stamps (many places online have these)
Birthday Celebrations
If you wish to bring something to share with classmates for a birthday celebration, please limit it to a non-food acknowledgement. This is a district policy for grades K-5 to provide a safe environment for those with food sensitivities and/or allergies. Donation examples include, but are not limited to: a favorite book or board game for the class collection, stickers, pencils, pens, markers, erasers, etc. Do not send latex balloons.
It is not required to send anything to acknowledge a student's birthday.
Reporting Absences
When your child is absent, please use one of the two options below to ensure the office receives messages about your student's attendance. Attendance messages sent directly to teachers will not be received by the office if the teacher is absent or does not read/forward the message.
- ParentVUE (this is the fastest and easiest) - Select "Report Absences" on the Student List/Home Screen. Click here for the ParentVUE login link.
- Note: For midday pickups, notify the teacher directly via email, please do not submit the absence on ParentVue.
- Call the attendance line: 651-621-7401. This is a voicemail only line so you can leave a message any time of the day or night.
If your child is sent home for illness and health staff have told you your student cannot attend the following day, you must still enter it in ParentVUE or call the attendance line. For the safety of our students we verify their absences every morning.
