Ashley Hickmott earns a Bronze in HOSA Competition!
HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America)-Future Health Professionals has provided opportunities for students to compete in categories such as Medical Law and Ethics, CPR, Clinical Nursing, Sports Medicine, and Veterinary Science at the Middle School, Secondary School, and College levels since the 1960's and early 1970's. Through name and focus changes, the purpose has been the same: to develop leadership and technical skill competencies in the health professions.
Dryden Junior/Senior High School junior Ashley Hickmott (11th grade) also attends the Lapeer County Education Technology Center as a student in the Health Occupations class. On December 19, 2020, students participated in a virtual medical competition for HOSA - Health Occupations Students of America.
Ashley competed in the Health Education category, which provides members with the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills required to select a health-related concept or instructional objective, then prepare a lesson for a targeted group of learners, provide instruction, and evaluate results. This competitive event consists of a portfolio and presentation to judges and each team consists of 2-4 members. This event aims to inspire members to be proactive future health professionals by educating others on health-related concepts.
Ashley finished in 3rd place and captured a Bronze Medal at the December competition. She will now move on to compete at the state level competition in April. Congratulations, Ashley, and good luck at States!
Senior Seminar Speakers
Mark Owen, MEEMIC Insurance
by Alyssa Daoud
This week we had a guest speaker from MEEMIC Insurance Company. I do not know much about insurance and Mr. Owen gave me a great understanding of it. I did not realize how many different things required insurance. He spoke about my graduating class running into issues next year with needing our own insurance. I had no idea that I would need home insurance if I were to reside in an apartment or dorm next year. I always thought if something happened the school or apartment would take care of it. I now realize that this is far from true. If someone were to start a fire on the floor above me and cause damage to my belongings, I would need my own home owner’s insurance for my stuff to be fixed or replaced. I also learned that I am able to stay on my parent’s insurance until I am twenty-five years old. I may also be able to stay on their insurance longer if I am still in college and can prove it. He explained a lot about car insurance and the risks that come with driving that I never realized before. If I had my car insured and I hit someone my insurance will be able to cover it. However, if I did not have good coverage on my insurance plan and someone else hits me, I may have to pay for it myself. This is why he heavily emphasized that we should review all the insurance plans possible and not just do whatever our parents do. This is because it may benefit your parents but not yourself. I found his presentation very beneficial for my future.

Random Student Spotlight
Cheyenne Sabo
by Lily Finnigan
Today in our random student spotlight we have Cheyenne Sabo! Cheyenne is an 8th grader who has been at Dryden for two years. She is a part of the Art Club and says her favorite thing about Dryden is that the people are very nice. Outside of school, Cheyenne likes to hang out with friends. Her dream career is either as an artist or a hairstylist. She hopes to do well in high school then go to college to get her cosmetology license. Cheyenne’s favorite colors are cyan and pink. She also has two cats, one named Shadow and one named Dream, and has a turtle named TT - short for Tiny Turtle. Cheyenne says the hardest thing about COVID is not being able to see her friends. Thanks, Cheyenne!
