English 3-4 CT Spotlight
Here is an update on our recent work and where we are heading next:
Our English 3-4 students recently completed a Short Stories Unit focused on characterization. Throughout the unit, students analyzed how authors develop characters through their actions, dialogue, motivations, relationships, and responses to conflict.
Students practiced using textual evidence to support their analysis and examined how characterization contributes to a story’s larger meaning. The English 3-4 CT team used student work and assessment data to identify areas of mastery as well as skills that may need additional reinforcement.
Students who need additional support will continue receiving targeted practice with identifying character traits, selecting relevant textual evidence, and explaining how that evidence supports their analysis.
Looking Ahead: Next Steps
We are now preparing to begin Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes. Students will build on their work with theme, summary, characterization and informative writing as they examine how the main character develops and changes throughout the text.
As students read, they will analyze character development, make inferences using textual evidence, and explore larger ideas surrounding intelligence, relationships, identity, and personal growth. The unit will give students an opportunity to apply the reading and analysis skills developed during the Short Stories Unit to a longer, more complex text.
ELA 1-2 Team Update
This quarter, the ELA 1-2 team has focused on writing strong summaries and using textual evidence to support interpretations. Guided by our essential question:
How do the choices a person makes define who they become? Students are reading classics like, “The Most Dangerous Game” and are currently exploring The Odyssey, connecting both to the hero’s journey and discussing traits that make a person heroic. Engaging routines like gallery walks, vertical writing, and color coding have helped students stay organized and active in their learning. We also emphasize creativity through projects such as the “Mood One-Pager” and the upcoming Hero’s Journey Board Game project, which will explore heroism in the written and real world.
Cafeteria News
Students will be charged $1.75 for breakfast & $3.75 for lunches for the 26 -27school year.
Your child may qualify for free or for reduced priced meals! DVUSD has waived the reduced price meal co-pay for both breakfast and lunch this year so those qualifying will also receive meals at no cost.

For your convenience, there is a link on the school website. Online applications are processed within 24 hours. Please keep your approval letter for proof of acceptance in the program.
Applications must be completed each year. If you qualified last year you must complete your application so it is processed by September 14th to avoid being charged for lunches.

Learner Profile Trait for October ~ Inquirers
Barry Goldwater is an International Baccalaureate (IB) school. As such we aspire to fulfill the traits embodied in the Learner Profile. Each month we will highlight and celebrate one of these traits.
The Learner Profile trait for October is Inquirer.
We nurture our curiosity, developing skills for inquiry and research. We know how to learn independently and with others. We learn with enthusiasm and sustain our love of learning throughout life.
Reflect on the following quote: “One of the basics of a good system of innovation is diversity. In some ways, the stronger the culture (national, institutional, generational, or other), the less likely it is to harbor innovative thinking. ~ Nicholas Negroponte
Scam Alert
Parents, please be aware of a phone scam targeting families with high school students preparing for the SAT or ACT.
Scammers are calling households using your child’s name, school information, and even test dates to make their pitch sound legitimate. They claim your child requested study materials and offer to send flash drives and other resources. But here’s the catch:
They ask for a “refundable deposit” of $249. They say you’ll receive materials by mail. You’re told to return the flash drives within 30 days to get your money back. In reality, the materials never arrive, and your money is gone.
This scam has been flagged by the Better Business Bureau, which confirms that scammers are impersonating organizations like the College Board to steal personal and financial information. The College Board does not solicit payments or personal info over the phone.
