Weekly Update

Dear Families,

I really enjoyed getting to know everyone a little bit this week. We have a wonderful class!

We are off to a great start. We focused on getting to know each other and setting up group norms and expectations. This can be a little boring in the beginning, but it really helps us set up strong foundations for a great year of learning.

Here is a brief look at our upcoming learning targets and what we did this past week:

Learning Targets:

I can read, understand and respond to text.

I can share information orally in front of an audience.

I can accurately add, subtract, multiply and apply place value.

I can learn about symbols and features of Colorado.

Reading: This week we read a variety of books about friendship. Students got to know one another and discover how we are the same and different from each other.

Writing: We worked on creating class and team norms and sharing our paper bag speeches. The kids did an amazing job with this. I was impressed with how they organized their information and also connected with their audience, asked questions, and showed interest in one another. Well done kids!

Math: Students reviewed some basic facts and practice in math. We did a fun superhero math task that kids seemed to enjoy. We also played some games. Next week we will begin our first unit in math on place value.

NRE is rotating for math classes. You should have received an email earlier this week about this. You will also receive an email from your child's math teacher soon.

Students need to know their multiplication facts. In 4th grade one of our first units is on multiplication with multiple digits. It is very hard if a student does not already know his/her basic facts. So please practice these at home, it will really help your child build confidence in math.

Social Studies: Students learned about Colorado state symbols. We started symbols of ourselves in our "Symbols of Me" crest. Students will share these in front of the class next week as we introduce goals in oral presentations for the year.

Please remember, next week students need a foam board. This is for our first project in social studies. The boards are typically about 16"x20" and the kids will use it to build a map of Colorado. Students need the boards by Friday, August 22nd. It typically can be found at Michaels, Target, Walmart, or on Amazon.

I enjoyed getting to know your children a little this week. I am so excited for the year ahead.

I wish you all a safe and happy weekend,

Hope Crawley
