A Message from McKinney ISD Safety and Security

Dear McKinney ISD Families,

As the Senior Director of Safety and Security, I want to address an increase in threat-related incidents involving students this school year, particularly at the elementary level.

While some students may believe they are joking or expressing frustration, threats of violence are never considered a joke by our district. Regardless of a student's intent, every threat must be taken seriously, investigated, and addressed to protect our students and staff.

Threats Involving Firearms

Threats involving firearms are especially serious. Under Texas Education Code § 37.125, certain intentional threats to exhibit or use a firearm on school property or a school bus constitute a criminal offense.

When a threat may violate the law, the McKinney Police Department (MPD) will be contacted. Law enforcement will determine the appropriate response based on the circumstances and applicable law. This may include further investigation, referral for criminal proceedings, or arrest when legally authorized.

Statements such as “I was just joking,” “I didn’t mean it,” or “I would never actually do it” do not eliminate the seriousness of a threat or the district’s responsibility to respond.

How Parents Can Help

Please talk with your children about the seriousness of their words and the consequences of making threats. Reinforce these expectations:

  • Never threaten another student, staff member, or school.
  • Never joke about shooting, killing, or bringing a weapon to school.
  • Never make threats through text messages, social media, online gaming platforms, or group chats.
  • Report concerning statements or behavior to a trusted adult immediately.
  • Never repeat, share, or encourage threats made by others.

Help your children understand that anger, frustration, or disagreements never justify threatening language. Encourage them to seek help from a parent, teacher, counselor, administrator, or another trusted adult when they are struggling.

A Special Reminder for Families of Elementary Students Ages 10 and Older

As children grow older, their communication increasingly extends to text messages, social media, online gaming, and group chats. Please remind your child that threats involving violence or firearms are serious, even when made as a joke, during an argument, or online.

At this age, students need to understand that their words and actions can have significant school and legal consequences. Encourage your child to speak up and report concerning statements or behavior to a trusted adult rather than sharing, repeating, or encouraging threats.

Continue having open conversations about responsible communication, managing emotions, and resolving conflict safely. Reinforce that students can express anger, disagree with others, and work through difficult situations without threatening anyone's safety.

A Shared Responsibility

School safety requires a partnership among our schools, families, students, and community. Our goal is not only to respond to threats but to prevent them through education, communication, and early reporting.

Please speak with your children today. Remind them that they can express anger, disagree, and resolve conflicts without making others fear for their safety. Every student has a role in helping maintain a safe and supportive school environment.

A threat is not a joke.

A firearm threat is not a joke.

Reporting a concern is not tattling.

Words have consequences.

Thank you for your partnership in maintaining safe, secure, and supportive schools for every student in McKinney ISD.

Respectfully,

Russel G. May
Senior Director of Safety and Security

Your Words and Actions Matter – Help Keep Our Schools Safe

Collegiate Academy of McKinney (CAM)

A Collegiate Academy is a specialized high school program that allows students to earn both a high school diploma and an associate degree (or at least 60 college credit hours) concurrently. This is achieved through a partnership between McKinney ISD and Collin College.

Important Things to Know:

  • A collegiate academy is an accelerated pathway to College for historically underserved students (i.e. low income students, at-risk students, etc.)
  • Students can earn required high school credits while earning an Associate’s Degree (AA or AS)
  • Students take classes together in a cohort for each year of high school. This allows them to get a head start on College coursework and minimize cost!

For more information visit the Collegiate Academy of McKinney's website page and also check out our McKinney ISD Podcast that includes more information about CAM.

The application for McKinney ISD's Collegiate Academy of McKinney (CAM) opens on November 2, 2026. Visit our webpage for details: https://www.mckinneyisd.net/page/collegiate-academy-of-mckinney

McKinney ISD earns Superior Rating on TEA's Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas

McKinney ISD has earned the Superior Achievement rating from the Texas Education Agency's School Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas (FIRST) for the 2025-2026 school year. It marks the 23rd time in 24 years that the district has earned the highest possible rating.

"This achievement reflects our ongoing commitment to financial integrity, transparency and responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars," said Dr. Dennis Womack, assistant superintendent of business operations. "We believe that managing resources with integrity and openness builds trust within our community and demonstrates our accountability to those we serve."

FIRST, established by the 77th Texas Legislature in 2001, drives school systems to enhance financial resources to provide the maximum allocation possible for direct instructional purposes. The ratings are based on annual financial reports submitted by school systems to TEA for the 2025 fiscal year. The reports are subsequently reviewed by the agency and a rating is assigned.

Each school system receives a letter grade (A, B, C, or F) in the financial accountability ratings, along with a coinciding financial management rating: Superior Achievement, Above Standard Achievement, Meets Standard Achievement or Substandard Achievement.

FIRST ratings are calculated using 21 financial indicators for both traditional school districts and public charter schools, such as administrative cost expenditures; the accuracy of a district or charter school’s financial information submitted to TEA; and any financial vulnerabilities or material weaknesses in internal controls as determined by an external auditor.

All Texas public school systems are required to share their financial accountability ratings with parents and taxpayers at a public meeting to discuss the financial report. Marlene Harbeson, Chief Financial Officer, reported the district's rating during the October 19, 2026, meeting of the MISD Board of Trustees.

McKinney ISD Earns Overall ‘A’ Grade from Niche, Recognizing Academic Excellence and College Preparation

McKinney Independent School District is proud to announce that it has received an overall grade of ‘A’ from Niche, a trusted school and district rating platform. This recognition reflects the district’s ongoing commitment to academic excellence, student support, and community engagement.

The ‘A’ grade from Niche is based on a comprehensive analysis of academic performance, student and parent reviews, and various measures of quality, including teacher qualifications, resources, and extracurricular activities. McKinney ISD’s outstanding performance in these areas demonstrates the district’s dedication to fostering a positive learning environment where every student can succeed.

“We are proud to receive this recognition from Niche for the third year in a row,” said Shawn Pratt, Superintendent of McKinney ISD. “This grade is a testament to the hard work of our teachers, staff, and administrators, as well as the support of our families and community members. Our focus remains on providing a high-quality education for all students.”

Niche grades are determined by a variety of factors, including test scores, college readiness, graduation rates, and the feedback of students and parents. McKinney ISD’s commitment to maintaining small class sizes, offering a wide range of Advanced Placement (AP) courses, and providing opportunities in arts, athletics, and career and technical education have all contributed to this high rating.

In addition to the overall ‘A’ grade, McKinney ISD earned high marks in specific categories such as academics, college prep, diversity, sports, and college readiness. These ratings highlight the district’s strength in preparing students for future success both in college and beyond.

As McKinney ISD continues to grow, this recognition serves as a reminder of the district’s vision of every student, every day. With a focus on continuous improvement, McKinney ISD remains dedicated to providing every student with the tools they need to reach their full potential.

Founded in 1848 to educate the children of local farmers and small business owners, McKinney schools have been a focal point of our community for over 150 years. Although the world has changed dramatically since McKinney saw its first settlers, the importance of a strong educational system that provides children with skills to be productive citizens in our society is still a priority for our community.

The McKinney Independent School District has a long-standing reputation for educational excellence, and our district is continually recognized at both the state and national levels.

McKinney ISD’s success can be attributed to the leadership of our elected Board of Trustees, the professional educators who work diligently to give every child the best education possible, and the support of our parents and community who value and set high standards for the children of MISD.
