FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK
Dear Edison Families,
If you haven't figured it out already, we have a very exciting week ahead! This is the week leading up to Halloween and our Fall Festival/Day of the Dead Celebration, and its all hands on deck to create a unique memorable experience for all!
ALTAR SET UP - Thursday 1:00-3:00 pm
Volunteers will begin setting up the cafeteria for our one of a kind Day of the Dead altar exhibition starting at 1pm on Thursday. This includes organizing the cafeteria tables to create altar displays with backdrops, hanging black table cloths over everything, and putting up magical lights.
ALTAR DECORATION - Friday 10:00-3:00 pm
Classroom Volunteers will transfer the art and items collected by the classroom to the cafeteria and set up an altar display for their classroom starting at 10 am on Friday (right after the Halloween Parade). Make sure you send whatever items the teacher or room rep asked for to school by Friday morning.
HALLOWEEN PARADE - Friday, 9:00-10:00 am
We will have our annual Halloween Parade on the field on Friday, 9:00-10:00 am. All families are invited to attend. Here is what you need to know:
- Students arrive to school in their costumes (no weapons) and bring a change of clothes
- Parents enter from the Kansas Gate 8:45-9:00 am
- Parents will form a circle around the perimeter of the grass
- Students will parade around the grass perimeter for all parents to see 9:00-10:00 am
- Students change out of costumes and into school clothes
- Parents leave campus through Kansas gate 10:00-10:15 - gate closes at 10:15!
- Parents who will help with altar decoration must check in at the front office and get a visitor badge
NOTE: Students whose parents do not wish for them to participate in the parade should let the teacher know by Wednesday. We will have an alternate activity planned for them.
ALTAR RECEPTION - Friday, 6:00-8:00
This event is for 5th grade tour guides only. We invite dignitaries from the district and city to come tour our altar display. 5th graders who have signed up will be giving tours of the altars in both languages.
FALL FESTIVAL/DAY OF THE DEAD - Sunday 1:00-5:00 pm
This is the event we have all been waiting for! Come on, come all, to enjoy a fun-filled, community-building afternoon at Edison. Enjoy delicious food, fun games, music, dancing, Halloween costume contest, plus beautiful cultural displays like our altars and a sawdust carpet. No festival is quite like this, and our students and parents create it. Parents - don’t forget to sign up for a shift at your classroom booth!
SIGN UPS
All of this fun doesn't happen without the support of our community. Check Konstella for sign ups to help.
Looking forward to a fun-filled memorable week!
Warmly,
Directora IpiñaSCHOOL ANNOUNCEMENTS
WEDNESDAY MEETING: Coffee with the Principal
This Wednesday, we are hosting Coffee with the Principal in the Library and in Zoom from 8:30-10:00 am. Directora Ipiña will talk about "How to Make the Most Out of Parent/Teacher Conferences" and then open up the meeting to questions.
MUSICAL INSTRUMENT REMINDER
Parents of 4th and 5th graders!
We are so fortunate to have instrumental music for our 4th and 5th graders. Besides learning music skills, students are learning to be responsible for their instrument. Unfortunately, many students are forgetting their instruments at home.
Please make sure your child remembers to bring their instrument to school on Mondays and Fridays. When students forget their instrument and parents drop it off, we must interrupt instruction to call the classroom and let the teacher know. Your child then misses instruction to come down and get it.
Starting in November, we will no longer call the classroom. If your child forgets their instrument and you bring it to the office, they must pass by the office to get it on the way to music class.
ENGLISH LEARNER FAMILY SURVEY
We want to hear from you!
SMMUSD is inviting families of current English Learner (EL) students to complete our English Learner Family Survey. If your child is currently identified as an English Learner, we encourage you to share your feedback about your family’s experience and the support your child receives at school.
Your voice is important to us! Your feedback will help our schools and district better understand the needs of our English Learner students and families and identify ways we can continue to improve our programs and services.
The survey opens October 12. Thank you for taking the time to share your voice with us!
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Lend a helping hand
Here are some great ways you can help our school:
AM Valet
Come to the office at 8am to get an orange vest and help open car doors on Virginia Avenue. Your child can enter the gates at 8am (no matter the grade) so you can help. We need help Monday-Friday. Just show up when you are available.
Lunch Bunch
We are looking for volunteers to support our lunch bunch activities. These are alternative activities for students who would prefer a quieter activity during lunch. This will begin Oct 13 and continue as long as we have support. Just show up when you are available. See days and times below:
- Tuesday, 12:00-1:20, Art Cart
- Thursday, 12:00-1:20, Watercolor in the garden
Note: You must be volunteer trained and approved to work with students.

4th Grade Making Katrinas
4th grade has taken on a huge endeavor in making life sized Katrinas for our altar display this year. They went all out because it's our 40 anniversary and they really wanted to do something special. All classes are preparing something special for the altars. Make sure to come see our students' creations in full color and on display in the cafeteria this Sunday during the festival.
Water Safety - Beach Day
A huge thank you to the Surf Bus Foundation and it's champion, parent Marion Clark, for providing our students with an opportunity to build their water safety in the ocean and pool while having a blast these last two weekends!
