This would make a great Kahoot!
Why do snowflakes have six sides? Are any two really alike? NOAA's short, kid-friendly explainer is packed with facts you can turn into a quick classroom quiz.

What Makes Winter, Winter?

  • Why do we have seasons at all? It's not about distance from the sun! This NOAA explainer uses Earth's tilt to show why it's winter in December here and summer in Australia. Great for grades 5-8.
  • The shortest day of the year. The winter solstice falls on Monday, December 21, 2026. The Library of Congress shares photos of how cultures from the Hopi to ancient Jordan have marked it for thousands of years.
  • Celebrate the solstice in class. Pair that with Education World's solstice activities to help students dig into this once-a-year event.
  • Hands-on science. Try these winter science experiments. No snow where you live? A freezer works just fine!
Say it with video!
