Field Trip
We are finalizing the details for our first field trip on Wednesday, October 16th. You should to receive more information soon! We think that the students will love it!
Chromebooks
Please check in with your students about the status of their Chromebook. Several students have complained about various technical issues. We have encouraged them to share the concern with you.
Each night, students should close all tabs, power off the device, and charge it. We have talked about these important practices to keep their Chromebooks up-to-date and functioning well.
It is very important to arrive at school each day with a fully charged Chromebook.
Birthday Celebration Policy
As we work towards creating a safe school environment for all of our students, we are implementing a new policy regarding birthday celebrations.
We kindly ask that no food items be brought to school for birthday celebrations. This decision aims to:
Ensure Health and Safety: With various food allergies and dietary restrictions among students, this measure helps us prevent potential health risks.
Alternative Celebration Ideas:
We encourage you to consider the following non-food alternatives to make your child's birthday special at school:
Classroom Donation: Donate a book or educational game to the classroom in your child's name.
Goodie Bags: Provide small, non-food items like stickers, pencils, or erasers for classmates.
Birthday Craft Kits: Send in simple craft kits for students to enjoy during a break.
All students will be celebrated in our classroom in various ways on their birthday and throughout their birthday month, or half month. We appreciate your understanding and collaboration in implementing this new policy.
Last Week's Photos
English Language Arts
Last week, students jumped into our ELA routines. First, students learned about building our schemas in order to become stronger readers and writers. Then, we started our first set of vocabulary words from Wordly Wise, as well as our first prefix of the year (un-). At the end of the week, we reviewed the elements of stories and the plot mountain. In Writing, students reviewed the 8 parts of speech through various station activities, then capped off the week with a short quiz (minor grade!).
This week, we will continue reviewing story elements and read our first short story. Lesson 1 vocabulary words will continue to be our focus, as well as a new prefix (con-). Please note that our word parts study is happening alongside our vocabulary study since the word parts are included in our current vocabulary list. Learning word parts will help students connect words and understand the meaning of unfamiliar words that they may encounter. During our Writing period, we will review simple, compound, and complex sentences, as well as coordinating and subordinating conjunctions.
**A quick note about our vocabulary and word parts study - We will spend approximately three to three and a half weeks with each set of Wordly Wise words. You should expect to see your student reviewing the words often. All students have created flashcards to use at home and in school. Next week, students will have their first quiz for the Lesson 1 words. They will be assessed on their knowledge of the definitions only. In a few weeks, they will have their first vocabulary test, which will assess their knowledge of synonyms, antonyms, and using the words in context.

This week, students will learn about reading the Bible, why we study the Old Testament, and the ways that God reveals himself to us.

The class will have a test on MONDAY on the ratio topics we have worked on during the past two weeks. We will learn what makes a proportional relationship and how to solve proportions next.

Science
Next week, they will learn about the different types of variables and apply this to another lab, or possibly two if we can fit them in next week. I hope you enjoy the pictures of their lab in this week's photo album.
