🔐 Did you know that October was Cybersecurity Awareness Month!

In today’s world, digital safety matters more than ever—whether you’re submitting college applications, applying for jobs, or just scrolling social media. Cybersecurity Awareness Month is a reminder to protect your personal information and make smart choices online.

Top 5 Tips for Students:

  1. Use strong passwords – Avoid using your birthday or pet’s name; create unique passphrases for every account.

  2. Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) – It’s one of the easiest ways to keep hackers out.

  3. Think before you click – Don’t open suspicious links or attachments.

  4. Update your devices – Software updates patch security flaws and keep your information safe.

  5. Protect your digital reputation – Colleges and employers often review your online presence—keep it positive and professional.

💡 Bonus: Explore careers in Cybersecurity, Information Technology, and Computer Science through our Early College and CTE Pathways! These high-demand fields need problem-solvers who know how to protect digital spaces.

Student Host Internship (PAID!!) SDCOE iTV Team

SDCOE’s iTV Team is hiring a high school Student Host for this school year’s series of Academic League competitions, including 2 recorded semi-final shows and a live championship show. The Host’s job is to welcome viewers and contestants to the show and to introduce the team coaches and the moderator. They also return at the conclusion of each match to congratulate winners, thank all players, and invite viewers to the next match.

The Academic League semi-finals and finals will take place Wednesday, May 20th and Thursday, May 21st and typically run for 3 hours starting at 4 pm. The Student Host will need to attend 6 - 10 hours of in-person studio rehearsals at SDCOE’s main campus in Linda Vista. They will be supported and coached by the moderator and iTV’s studio producer, both of whom have extensive professional on-air experience.

Responsibilities: The Student Host will need to…

  • Familiarize themselves with Academic League events using previous years recordings and practice scripts.
  • Achieve a level of comfort in front of the camera by practicing with the producer virtually or in person.
  • Participate in 4 studio rehearsals with a full crew. Rehearsals are scheduled twice a week, beginning 2 weeks prior to the first studio match.
  • Host 3 competitions – 2 recorded and 1 live.
  • Work with the producer to prepare Academic League promotional segments for live airing.
  • Arrange transportation to and from the studio for competitions and rehearsals.
  • Attend the June San Diego County Board of Education Meeting to introduce the winning team to the board members.

Compensation:

  • $17 per hour. Time includes rehearsals, shows, and prep time before shows.

To Apply:

Interested students should complete the following by Saturday, November 8th at 5 pm…

  1. Review Academic League show YouTube links to familiarize themselves with the competition format and role of the Host.
    1. Welcome, Moderator, Close Sample – An excerpt of the beginning and end of the Academic League game, with our Student Host.
    2. Academic League Scoring Video – The AL Scoring Video, featuring our Student Host, recorded at the SDCOE Studios in Linda Vista.
    3. Time Out – The Time Out Announcements, featuring our Student Host, recorded at the SDCOE Studios in Linda Vista.
    4. Social Media Promo
    5. Academic League Sizzle Reel
  1. Create a 1-minute (max!) video introduction explaining why they want to be the Student Host and why they’d be a good host.
  2. Email your video file or link to ssrussell@sdcoe.net using the following label format: Name/Date/AL Student Host Application (e.g. Simone Russell/12/7/23/AL Student Host Application). In the email, students should provide a brief introduction of themselves. The subject line of the email should use the following format: Name/Date/AL Student Host Application (e.g. Simone Russell/12/7/23/AL Student Host Application).

The top five applicants will be invited to the studio for an in-person audition, consisting of a script reading. The judges will be looking for clear communication, on-camera presence, and enthusiasm. Please share this opportunity with your students! For questions about the position or application, contact Simone Russell (cc’d) with iTV at ssrussell@sdcoe.net.
