Superintendent's Message
The Hull Public Schools are definitely trending in the right direction! We carefully track specific data points and are serious about making sure improvements are made when the data informs us that we can do better. As part of our ongoing review of data, we set goals and develop strategies for improvement. In the fall, schools get the results of our efforts in the form of updated results and trends. It is worth pausing to reflect on how we are doing.
From the district level, it is great to see that both the Jacobs School and Hull High School improved student attendance last year. Principals Shaw and Hrivnak go into greater details of their school attendance rates in their newsletters: Efforts to ensure improved student attendance has paid off. Coming out of the pandemic, our focus was on making sure we provided highly engaged in-person learning opportunities. Increasing the frequency that students receive that instruction has been a goal for our schools.
While it might seem obvious, the research on student attendance is clear. Drawing on 206 separate studies, a meta-analysis completed in 2022 (Salgado, Cuadrado, & Moscoso) showed that students who miss school at higher rates more than erase the typical gains of a complete school year. School attendance is a partnership between our educators and our families/ caregivers. Thank you for supporting your children with the importance of attending school. Without consistent student attendance, moving the needle on academic achievement becomes a real challenge!
Community. Confidence. Curiosity.

Busy, Spirited & In Full Swing!
Fall has officially arrived, and things at the high school are full steam ahead! From sports teams taking the field, to clubs meeting, Theatre Arts preparing for their upcoming musical, and so much more, there is always something happening at Hull High!
We recently hosted Open House and Senior Parent Night, both of which had a wonderful turnout. Thank you to everyone who was able to attend! Itโs always so nice to see familiar faces again and to welcome new families into our school community.
Yesterday during Advisory, our Grade 8 students participated in Student Government Elections, while Grade 9 spent time with school counselors exploring learning styles. Grades 10โ12 took part in Pirate Time, and some of our seniors had the special opportunity to add their names to the seawall if they missed the chance to do so over the summer. Our team captains also came together for Captains Camp with Mr. Kistner, focusing on leadership, working through season timeline, and season updates ๐๐
The state started to release Accountability and MCAS data for the 2025โ2026 school year. After reviewing these initial results with our staff yesterday, I could not be prouder of what our students have accomplished!
One of our priorities has been improving daily attendance, knowing how essential consistent school habits are to student growth. Thanks to your support and our team's efforts, our chronic absenteeism rates have decreased dramatically over the past five years, as shown in the visual below. While we remain focused on making every day count, this is a win for our school community. Go Pirates!!
