Important Schedule Changes for March and the NC Children's Book Award

This month is a VERY busy one in the library, so we are not going to be on our regular schedule. Next week, I will have book fair previews March 6th-8th. Please sign up HERE for your preview time. Remember to stay with your class so you can make your wish lists, and also help them with their wish lists. (K-2 classes are encouraged to bring their iPads to snap photos of wishlist items. 3-5 can make paper/pencil wish lists as we have done in the past.)

I will be opening up some circulation times for classes to come and trade books the week AFTER our book fair, but we don't have enough days in this month to complete normal rotations, so these will only be open circulation, no regular class. (Be on the lookout for a signup for those dates soon!)

Mr. Daniels has generously offered to help keep the circulation desk open on days/times when he is not covering other classes or responsibilities, so during my absences, he will keep you updated if he is able to open the library as he is able. (Thank you, Mr. Daniels!) 😊

Library Schedule:

March 6-8--Book Fair Previews (no regular classes)

March 9-10--Golightly and Daniels at NCTIES Conference in Raleigh (library closed)

March 13-17--Spring Book Fair

March 20-23--Open Circulation ONLY (Sign-up Schedule Coming Soon!)

March 24--Golightly off-campus for Battle of the Books Competition

March 27-28--Golightly Presenting at NC Reading Association Conference (Limited Library Availability Based on Volunteer Support)

March 29--Early Release--Open Circulation Only

March 30-31--Golightly Off-Campus (Limited Library Availability Based on Volunteer Support)

During library classes, we have been reading the nominees for the NC Children's Book Award. Voting is open March 1st through March 31st, and I have shared six books with all grade levels at this point. (It is a requirement that each person voting has read/heard at least five of the titles, so everyone is eligible to vote at this point.)

If you want to share any videos or eBooks of the remaining titles prior to voting, check out these resources! If you would like to see which NCCBA winners and nominees we have in our library, check out this collection I've compiled in Destiny. You can also read ALL of these books as eBooks through the NC Kids Digital Library! (Click HERE for the link to this collection of eBooks.)
Follow the NC Children's Book Award on Twitter! (@NCCBABooks)

CLICK HERE for the link to vote on the NC Children's Book Award nominees. (You can vote as a class, and just count up how many of each title, or let each individual student vote, depending on age/ability.) Voting ends March 31st, so please try to do this with your classes prior to then if possible. Our students are so excited to have a voice in picking a real book award!

Battle of the Books Update

Battle of the Books...

We only have TWO practices left before our county competition for Battle of the Books! Our team represented our school well at the middle school competition and learned a lot, so we are ready to dominate the competition when our turn comes! Please remind your students on the team to always be reading at least one BOB book to keep them fresh in their mind. Each team member also has access to battlequestions.com, which helps quiz them on potential questions that may be like the ones at competition, so if they have any extra time during the day, that is a great tool to use to help them sharpen their skills!

Remaining Meeting Dates:

3/9/2023

NO Mtg 3/16--no school

3/23/2023--Last mtg

3/24/2023--Countywide EBOB Competition at Newport Middle School!!

Our county-wide competition will be held March 24th at Newport Middle School.

More details to come soon!

STAFF BOOK CLUB--Yay!!

The first book club meeting was awesome, and we are eager to read the next title on our list! If you haven't joined in yet, but you have been thinking about it, it's not too late. Our March meeting will be March 29th from 6-8pm at Floyd's in MHC.

Our NC Humanities Grant has given our school 15 copies of 5 different NC-based titles to run from February through June. Please fill out this Google Form if you are interested in participating in the book club. If we enjoy it, we can always continue on after the grant books are finished and choose our own books. :)

40 Book Challenge!!

Remind your students in grades 3-5 about the 40 Book Challenge! Our goal is to read 40 chapter books over the course of the school year, and I have started filling in my own chart so they can watch it grow throughout the year. This is an optional activity, and some of your students have already picked up their own challenge papers in the library. You can see that I am adding the image of each book cover as I finish each book. This is a great way to show your kids what you are reading if you decide to participate in the 40 Book Challenge, too! Showing your students that YOU are a reader is a powerful way to encourage their reading habits without having to say a thing.

Tech Tidbits...

What is ChatGPT and how can it benefit my classroom?

As an elementary school educator, you may be wondering what ChatGPT is and how it can benefit your classroom. ChatGPT is a large language model developed by OpenAI that uses deep learning algorithms to understand natural language and generate responses to questions and prompts. Essentially, it's a highly advanced chatbot that can be programmed to provide answers to a variety of queries.

Here are 5 ways that ChatGPT can be used to enhance instruction for elementary school students:

  1. Writing Prompts: Use ChatGPT to generate writing prompts for students, which can help them practice their writing skills and encourage creativity.
  2. Vocabulary Building: ChatGPT can be used to introduce new vocabulary words to students and provide definitions and examples of how the words are used in context.
  3. Math Assistance: ChatGPT can help students with math problems and provide step-by-step explanations to help them understand the process.
  4. Storytelling: Use ChatGPT to create interactive storytelling experiences for students, where they can ask questions and receive responses based on their input.
  5. Social and Emotional Learning: ChatGPT can be used to provide students with advice on how to handle social and emotional situations, such as dealing with bullies or managing anxiety.

In conclusion, ChatGPT is an advanced chatbot that can be used in a variety of ways to enhance instruction for elementary school students. As an educator, you can program ChatGPT to meet the specific needs of your students and make learning more fun and interactive.

If you found this article interesting and educational, you should probably know it was completely written by ChatGPT.

EVERY student in Carteret County Public Schools has access to this resource. Hey, podcast people! Check this out!

To foster interaction with other librarians and educators around the world, I have recently started my own podcast, and I'm working to share things related to books, libraries, and education on a sort-of-weekly basis. I generally release new episodes on Monday evenings, and sometimes include interviews with special guests. If you enjoy podcasts, or know a librarian or book lover who might enjoy this, please take a listen and feel free to share!
