Monthly Message
During this season of giving thanks, I want to thank you for your continued support of our school district. I appreciate all that you do, whether you participate in committees, booster clubs, parent-teacher organizations, provide input, or simply strive to be an effective parent. Parenting has never been more challenging than it is today. I appreciate your active participation in our district, which is essential in providing the best educational experience for every child. I'm very grateful to have the opportunity to lead this district in this community. Enjoy your Thanksgiving break.
Sincerely,
Dr. R.

The Three P's
I recently had a discussion with a parent of an elementary school student who was having difficulties in school with behavior. I asked the parent if the child participated in any activities, such as band or sports. The parent shared that the child is interested in playing a sport but the parent was holding off until the child exhibited appropriate behaviors in school. I then shared my opinion as a parent and as a school administrator in a framework I call The Three P's.
Although I understand the parent's rationale (it seems logical) to use participation in activities as a reward, my experience tells me otherwise. The Three P's are: PASSION, PURPOSE, and PEOPLE. Here's the theory...
When students find their PASSION, it provides them with a great sense of PURPOSE. In turn, participating in activities provides opportunities for students to develop positive relationships with PEOPLE. The truth is, not all children are passionate about math, reading, science, and social studies. But if they love playing an instrument, a sport, or some other activity, the sense of purpose the activity provides can be a powerful incentive to attend school regularly, get good grades, and improve behavior. Then the positive relationships with people that follows strengthens their sense of identity, confidence, and motivation to succeed.
In short, encouraging your child to participate in activities can start a monumental shift in well being and success in school. I encourage you to support your child's endeavors and start to see participation in activities as part of your child's educational experience, not just a reward.
