When Should I Keep my Child Home from School? When Should I Keep my Child Home from School?

You should not send your child to school if he/she has:

  • Fever (100+ degrees) in the past 24 hours
  • Vomiting in the past 24 hours
  • Diarrhea in the past 24 hours
  • Chills
  • Rash
  • Sore throat
  • Strep Throat (must be on an antibiotic for at least 24 hours before returning to school).
  • Bad cold (very runny nose or bad cough that keeps the child awake at night).

Students should return after they are free of fever without the use of fever-reducing medications and no longer have symptoms. Also, consider your child’s recovery when deciding to return to school. Often as children recover from an illness, their little body's resistance to illness is low. Having them return to school too soon could cause them to become reinfected or ill all over again. If your child becomes ill at school and is exhibiting any of the above symptoms, or if the nurse decides the child is too sick to benefit from school, and/or is contagious to other children, you will be contacted.
