From Dr. Geaslen From Dr. Geaslen

This week across Granite Falls School District was filled with student leadership, learning, service, and school spirit. Thank you for the continued partnership and care you show our schools and students.

Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Through Action
Across the district, students and staff engaged in Martin Luther King Jr. assemblies centered on service, kindness, and the powerful question Dr. King asked us all: What are you doing for others?

Assemblies were held at Monte Cristo Elementary, Mountain Way Elementary, and Granite Falls Middle School. Students shared reflections and messages about courage, standing up for others, and caring for their community. At Monte Cristo Elementary, high school students joined the assembly to speak with younger students about being active in their community and the importance of student voice and activism. Their leadership showed our youngest learners that making a difference can begin at any age.

Granite Falls High School will hold its MLK assembly on Friday, January 23 (time TBD), continuing this district-wide focus on service and responsibility to one another.

There will be no school on Monday, January 19, as we honor and celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Student Voice Matters
This week, I met with our Student Representatives to the School Board and with our Tiger Cabinet facilitators as we planned for next week’s Tiger Cabinet meeting. Our students continue to bring thoughtful ideas and important perspectives to the table. Topics raised included a later start time for secondary students and the impact of student tardies, highlighting how engaged and reflective our students are about their learning environments.

What Is Tiger Cabinet?
Tiger Cabinet is Granite Falls School District’s student leadership and voice initiative, bringing together students from grades 3–12 from across our schools. Tiger Cabinet members meet regularly with district leadership to share their experiences, identify challenges, and help shape solutions that improve our schools. This work helps students build leadership skills while ensuring student perspectives are meaningfully included in district decision-making.

Student Representatives to the School Board
Student Representatives to the School Board are high school students selected to serve as a direct student voice to the Granite Falls School Board. These students attend board meetings and share updates and perspectives from students across the district. While they do not vote, their role is an important part of inclusive leadership and helps board members better understand how decisions impact students.

Celebrating School Spirit
Tonight, Granite Falls High School basketball hosts a four-game affair with both boys and girls teams taking the court beginning at 3:30 PM. Our pep band will be there playing loud and strong, and they always make the atmosphere better. Events like these showcase the pride, energy, and community that surround our students and schools.

Early Learning Success
We are proud of the growth we are seeing in our preschool students’ kindergarten readiness. Granite Falls is now close to the state average across all six readiness domains, reflecting the intentional and caring work of our early learning staff and the strong foundation being built for our youngest learners.

Bridge Builder Award Nominations Now Open
We invite families, students, and community members to nominate staff for our Bridge Builder Awards. These awards recognize certificated and classified staff who go above and beyond to build strong, positive relationships with students and families.

Bridge Builders are adults who make students feel seen, supported, and valued. They listen, encourage, and create safe, welcoming spaces where students can thrive. If a staff member has made a meaningful difference for your child or your family, we would love to hear about it.

The nomination link is available on our district website. Thank you for taking the time to recognize the incredible people who serve Granite Falls students every day.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support of Granite Falls School District.

Warmly,
Dr. Dana Geaslen

What is your role in the Granite Falls School District, and how long have you worked here?

"I serve as a Student Support Advocate supporting our elementary schools. My role is to bridge the gap between home, school and community by providing resources, mental health support, and a safe place for students and families to navigate life’s challenges. I am proud to be part of the Granite Falls team for the past four years."

What do you enjoy most about your job or working with students and staff in Granite Falls?

"Our staff in Granite Falls is incredibly collaborative; we don’t just teach subjects, we look at the whole child. I have an entire team I am blessed to work with everyday who care as much about a student’s emotional well-being as I do. Whether it’s a student finally feeling seen and heard, or a family getting the specific resources they’ve been searching for, that breakthrough is incredibly rewarding."

What’s one thing people might be surprised to learn about?

"People often think I only work with students when they are in crisis. In reality, a huge part of my job is proactive. It's about the small daily interactions that build trust for a student and/or family to come to you when things get hard."

What makes Granite Falls a special place to work?

" Granite is a small town with a big heart. There is a sense of looking out for one another here that you don’t find in larger Districts. When a family is in crisis I’ve seen this community rally faster that anywhere else I’ve worked. It feels like a big family working together."

What do you like to do outside of work — hobbies, family time, or activities that bring you joy?

"Outside of work you will often find me with sugar, fondant, and flour from one end of my kitchen to the other. My hobby is to make custom cakes. The bigger the challenge the better, and my kids love to feed into that challenge (literally)! "

Do you have a favorite quote, saying, or piece of advice that inspires you?

"Every child is one caring adult away from being a success story.” - Josh Shipp

"It reminds me that my primary job isn’t to fix everything, but to be a consistent, safe, and supportive presence in a child’s life."

If you could describe Granite Falls in one word, what would it be — and why?

"Resilient. Whether it’s facing personal hurdles or community challenges there is a deep-rooted strength here that is truly inspiring."

Around Granite Falls School District... Around Granite Falls School District...

Meet the Board | Director LeDoux Meet the Board | Director LeDoux

🎊This week, we would like to highlight Director LeDoux from District 1!

Peter moved from Lake Stevens to Granite Falls in April 2021 with his wife and two children after falling in love with the area. While new to the community, his passion for a strong public education system drove him to become involved with the Granite Falls School District early on. Peter is a graduate of the University of Washington; when he isn’t working, he enjoys golfing, hiking the Mountain Loop, and spending time with his family.

He strongly believes that the best way to enact change is through discussion, and he invites anyone to reach out with questions, concerns, or just to grab coffee.

Peter, we are so grateful for your dedication to the Granite Falls community and the impact you have on our school district.

Chess Tournament @ Crossroads Chess Tournament @ Crossroads

Things are getting intense over at Crossroads High School today. We’ve got students staring at wooden boards with more focus than ever. The tension is thicker than a grandmaster's rulebook. Whether you’re a "Queen’s Gambit" enthusiast or you still think a "fork" is just something you use to eat lunch, come witness the strategic chaos.

Know when to stay home... Know when to stay home...

Welcome back to school! To help protect the health and safety of all students and staff, we would like to remind families of the importance of keeping children home when they are sick.

Following guidance from the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), students should stay home if they are experiencing symptoms such as fever, vomiting, diarrhea, severe cough, sore throat with fever, or other signs of contagious illness. Students should return to school ONLY after symptoms have improved and they are well enough to participate fully in school activities.

Keeping ill students at home is one of the most effective ways to reduce the spread of infection and helps ensure a healthy learning environment for everyone. We also encourage regular handwashing, covering coughs and sneezes, and staying up to date with recommended health practices.

We appreciate your cooperation and partnership in keeping our school community safe and healthy!
