Principal Message
Back to School 2026-2027
Dear Families,
I am resending this message for any families who were just recently accepted into The Uplands. We will see you next week!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome to The Uplands Discovery Campus. A brand-new school is a rare thing: a fresh start, a blank page, and the chance to build something together from the very first day. I am honored to open it with you as your principal, and whether we already know each other or are meeting for the first time, I am glad your family is here.
A little about me. I have spent more than a decade leading schools, and I have come to believe a great one rests on a simple promise: every child walks in each morning feeling known, safe, and ready to learn. You will find me where that promise is kept, at the door greeting students in the morning, in the hallways during the day, and at the events that matter most to your kids. The best things happen for children when home and school pull in the same direction. Outside of school I am a husband, a dad, and a dog owner, and I spent much of this summer losing high-stakes negotiations with my toddler about toothbrushing.
Here is what makes this year unlike any other. We are not just starting a school year, we are starting a school. The traditions, the routines, the feel of this place for kids all begin now, with us. While we wait on our brand-new building and its new gym and playground, we will open the year in the newly renovated Shaw Heights building as a K-8 campus. I am all in, and I cannot wait to build this with you and your children.
If you have any questions, I am always available at jchism@wps.org. Thank you for trusting us with your children. Everything we do is aimed at creating a positive, safe, and engaging school for our kids, and I could not be more excited for the year ahead.
With pride,
Dr. Chism
First Days of School and Open House
- Back to School Open House: Tuesday, August 11 from 3:00 to 5:00 PM, a great chance to meet your child's teachers, walk the building, and let our 7th and 8th graders practice opening their lockers. Please bring your school supplies and any medication your student needs to take at school. For families with students in grades 3 through 5, please note that your child will have more than one teacher this year: one teacher for literacy and one for math. Open House is a great opportunity to meet both!
- First day for grades 1-8: Wednesday August 12
- First day for Kindergarten: Thursday, August 13
Arrival and Dismissal
- Doors open at 7:20 AM, and the tardy bell rings at 7:25 AM, so please plan to have your child here on time
- Tuesday through Friday, dismissal is 2:40 PM for most students, and 2:30 PM for Kindergarten and 1st grade
- Mondays are an early release with the same start time: pickup is 1:30 PM, and 1:20 PM for Kindergarten and 1st grade
- At dismissal, teachers will walk our K-5 students outside for pickup, while our 6-8 students will be released on their own
- We will use several different doors for student entry. Our younger students in grades K-5 will enter on the northeast side of the building, closest to their classrooms, and we will have plenty of staff outside and inside to help every student get where they are going
- At Back to School Open House we will hand out a sheet with all arrival and dismissal locations, so you know exactly where to drop off and pick up your child
Lunch and Food Deliveries
- Students may not use food delivery services such as DoorDash, Uber Eats, or Grubhub while at school. Any deliveries that arrive will be turned away
- If your child brings lunch from home, please send it with them at the start of the day. We ask that you do your best to avoid dropping lunch off in the middle of the day so we can keep instruction going without interruption
Transportation
- Transportation will be available to more students this year
- If you live within the Uplands boundary and outside the walking boundary, a bus route may be available to you
- You can check eligibility and register on the WPS Transportation page linked below. Sign-ups are open now
- If your child rode a bus last year, please check again this year. School feeder and boundary changes may have changed your child's eligibility, in either direction
- Next week you will be able to login to Infinite Campus to see if your child qualified for bussing
Free & Reduced-Price Meal Application
- Please complete the Free and Reduced-Price Meal Application online. It helps your family and supports our school, and every application makes a difference.
- Families who complete it by October 1st will receive a $20 discount on fees
- You can fill it out using the button below.
School Supplies
- Please bring your child's supplies to the Back to School Open House on August 11
- You can find each grade's supply list using the button below
Dress Code and Uniform Policy (2026-2027)
- Grades K-5: our uniform policy remains the same as before. No jeans are allowed. Tops must be school apparel, a polo, or a dress, in grey, white, blue, black, or our new school color of gold (yellow will suffice).
- Grades 6-8: uniforms are not required. Jeans are permitted as long as they do not have holes and are not pajama-style pants. Any color shirt is allowed, as long as it aligns with the district policy linked below. Shirts must have sleeves, midriffs must be covered, and shorts or skirts must be an appropriate length.
Cell Phone Policy
- Westminster Public Schools is addressing a growing concern that students spend too much time on personal devices, with real impact on learning, mental health, attention, and social and emotional wellness
- All of our schools will be cell phone-free from the first morning bell to the final dismissal bell this fall, including instructional time, passing periods, recess, study hall, and lunch, and this applies to smart devices such as tablets, wireless earbuds, and wearable technology
- Grades K-4: phones and smart devices must be powered off and kept securely in students' backpacks for the entire day
- Grades 5-8: phones and smart devices must be powered off and locked in students' lockers for the entire day
- We need your partnership: please talk with your student about the reasons behind the change and encourage responsible habits, since a positive tone at home will go a long way
- If you need to reach your student during the day, simply call the main office and we will relay urgent messages directly to them
- Exceptions are allowed for medical, disability, or specific instructional purposes with written approval, which you can request using the device exception form linked below
Estimadas Familias,
Bienvenidos a The Uplands Discovery Campus.
