A Welcome Back Reminder!

Summer has been a great time of rest and renewal. Now, it's time to start the school year off strong! Please remember that Assistive Technology must be considered at every IEP meeting! If AT is appropriate or if it should be explored, please check the corresponding box on the IEP Special Considerations page! To find out more information, check out PaTTAN's publication, Assistive Technology in the IEP. (Opens in new tab.)

Learn more about making your digital content accessible by visiting the NCADEMI website (opens in new tab)! Or, if you have access to Alludo, please consider taking the Accessibility 101 course!

Attention Supervisors & Administrators: Free Course on Digital Accessibility!

Digital accessibility of educational materials for students with disabilities is a shared priority.

And with the first conformance deadline for the updated ADA Title II requirements coming up

this April, digital accessibility is no longer optional.

NCADEMI has built a practical, evidence-based pathway for state and local education teams to

build capacity for digital accessibility. Through their free, interactive, virtual series, Powering

Digital Accessibility through Systemic Action, teams learn how to implement the Quality

Indicators for the Provision and Use of Accessible Materials in PreK-12 Systems. A readiness

protocol helps teams understand their starting point, and self-assessment tools guide goal-

setting and continuous improvement over time.

While the series is universally available for independent use, NCADEMI is launching a free

virtual Professional Learning Group (PLG) for state and local education teams seeking targeted

technical assistance. The PLG provides structure, expert guidance, and shared accountability to

help teams make sustained progress. Learn more about NCADEMI’s PLG.

NCADEMI is continually releasing new resources and learning opportunities for improving digital

accessibility in PreK-12 education.

  • Free AT Tools for Reading & Writing

AT Consultations

Are you unsure if a student is in need of assistive technology? Or, do you know that your student could benefit from AT, but you're just not sure what system, tool, or device would be best? Consider requesting an AT consultation, after getting approval from parents/guardians and your supervisor. After completing an AT Request for Support Form, a consultation time will be set up. This may include an in-person observation, a video observation, and/or picture samples of student work. A SETT meeting may then be scheduled so that the AT team can decide upon appropriate tools together, and generate a plan of action. The Assistive Technology Request for Support Form can be found here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSemEHpZOPpomJ1Atl3dMS4koLbLNz1aYJ2q1NPYVn6GGdMkSA/viewform?usp=sf_link

Coaching, anyone???

Teachers and SLPs....do you have students who are using AAC, but things aren't going as you had hoped? Do you have trouble getting them to initiate communication? Does it seem like they do not have any interest in using it? Is it difficult to get your students to use the device in other classrooms or settings? Do you believe there may be more that you and your support staff could be doing to help illicit more functional communication? If you answered YES to any of these questions, you may be interested in some AAC coaching sessions! Coaching sessions (virtual or in-person) would focus more on strategies YOU and your support staff can do to help foster communication in students who use AAC systems, rather than on specific students and devices/systems. (If you need specific assistance on determining if an AAC system is needed, or selecting an appropriate system, then please request an AT Consultation). Please email Jayna to schedule a session today! jgreenfield@iu28.org
