D41 Welcomes Student Board Members
Maeve Bernstein, Elizabeth Bredfeldt to be seated October 17
Two Hadley Junior High 8th grade students, Maeve Bernstein and Elizabeth Bredfeldt, have been selected to serve as student representatives on the Glen Ellyn School District 41 Board of Education. The students will serve for the remainder of this school year. They will be officially seated at the regular Board meeting on October 17, 2022.
“Effective governance requires an energetic, optimistic and future oriented mindset and we are thrilled to have Ms. Bernstein and Ms. Bredfeldt join the D41 School Board. Their presence and voice will be a constant reminder of how we should best conduct our business,” said Board President Dr. Robert Bruno.
Ms. Bernstein started attending Hadley in 7th grade. Prior to coming to Hadley, Ms. Bernstein attended St. Petronille School in Glen Ellyn. At Hadley, she is a student athlete and plays basketball. “The students deserve a voice when it comes to making decisions and I wanted to be that voice, as well as that I really liked the idea of being able to put in my opinions about what happens in my school and others,” said Ms. Bernstein. "Overall, I saw an opportunity to make my voice and my fellow students' voices heard and I was more than willing to try to take that, I am so grateful to be given this opportunity and I want to make the most of it.”
Ms. Bredfeldt attended Churchill Elementary School. At Hadley, she is involved in many activities and clubs including playing the cello in orchestra. When asked why she applied to be a student representative on the Board, she replied, "I applied to serve on the Board of Education because I care about our district and our community. This position is a great way for students to get their voices heard and have a say in our district,” said Ms. Bredfeldt. “Students are the ones who have the firsthand experience of feeling the effects of the changes the Board makes on their lives and are the best ones to describe their effect on our life. By having a student on the Board we are able to help our district and our community function in a way that benefits our students the most."
The role of student Board members is to provide advisory input to the District 41 Board of Education. As student members, they have the unique ability to represent the student voice during Board conversations and decisions. Student Board members will not be voting members of the Board and they will not have access to confidential information.
The students will be installed at the October 17 regular meeting of the Glen Ellyn School District 41 Board of Education.
Congratulations, to Ms. Bernstein and Ms. Bredfeldt. Welcome to the Board of Education!
