Basketball, Halloween, and Field Day!!! Basketball, Halloween, and Field Day!!!

This week we are starting our basketball unit. In our basketball unit, our main focus is learning the skill of dribbling with control. Our goal for our kinder and 1st grade students is to have them dribbling 5 times in a row from their spots. In second, we want them to be able to dribble with control while moving and changing directions. In 3rd and 4th grade, we focus on passing and in 5th, we want students to be able to dribble with control in a game like setting. We will also practice shooting the basketballs in the hoops, but this is not an expectation for students to do accurately... it's just for fun.

The week of Halloween will be really fun. We are going to be doing Halloween stations using Halloween themes to keep students moving. Examples: the rope swing being a pretend witch's broom and launching Gator ball "pumpkins" with exercise bands.

We will also be doing our Pumpkin Patch Halloween Game. Coach Lang, who's twin boys are now 21 and went to Summitt, still say that this game was their all time favorite game to play in elementary school. Basically, it is a search and find game. Students will be broken up into teams that are looking for Halloween items that are hidden under cones. Students go out into the "pumpkin patch" to look under one cone at a time to find their item. We do this with the lights off in the gym and flashlights.

Please let us know if your family does not celebrate Halloween and would prefer your student does not participate in these activities. We are happy to respect your wishes, and we will find an alternate activity for your student.

Field Days- November 6th and 7th

A couple of years ago, we made the decision to move our field days to the fall, and it has worked out so well. Not only do we have cooler weather, but we don't have scheduling conflicts with all the end of the year activities like we do in April and May.

This year, Kinder, 1st, and 2nd grades will have their field day on Thursday, Nov. 6th, and 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades will have theirs on Friday, the 7th. For the younger grades, we do stations in the morning followed by a popsicle/bubble/dance party on the blacktop in the afternoon. We have found that a full day of stations is really not the best for the younger students. The stations on Thursday will be run by 5th grade volunteers who have shown excellent leadership qualities so far this school year. We will also have 5th grade pals accompany the classes they support. 5th graders who get to support on Thursday will need both teacher and parent permission to miss class.

3rd, 4th, and 5th grades will have a full day of field day on the 7th. We will need some parent volunteers to help run the stations. That sign up will be coming out in the next couple of weeks.

As always, in PE our number one goal is to help your students become life long lovers of being physically active. Our specific goal this year is help students become stronger. If you have any concerns at all about your student, please feel free to reach out and let us know. We are happy to help your student be successful in any way.
