Exploring the future at Miller
Friday was Future Options Day at Miller Junior High School.
More than 30 professionals in the community came to the school to talk about their careers and answer student questions. The community members were stationed in classrooms and students built their own schedules, moving between classrooms on the bell schedule to attend presentations being led by professionals in careers of interest to them -- everything from banking, policing and social services to diesel mechanics, forestry, marine science, parks and recreation.
The learning opportunity was organized by Carrie Erwin, the school's GEAR UP instructor. Principal John Meers expressed appreciation at the number of community professionals who took time out of their day to share with students.
Congratulations to Cecil Gumaelius! Gumaelius has been named by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association as Athlete of the Week for Oct. 4-10. WIAA officials said the award is designed to honor student-athletes across the state for their outstanding performances and impactful contributions in their communities.
Gumaelius, a junior at Aberdeen High School, has remained undefeated in league competition while earning top-two finishes at three invitationals this season. After placing second in his first two invitationals, he captured the Oakridge Invitational title with a personal-best 5K time of 15:38.
SCHOOL BOARD
Next School Board meeting is Oct. 20, 2026
The next regular meeting of the School Board is at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, in the Community Room at Aberdeen High School. A work-study for continued discussion about a book on math instruction and fluency will begin at 5 p.m.
Those who attend regular meetings are welcome to sign up at the meeting to provide public comment on agenda items. Written public comment for the record can also be submitted up to noon the day of the meeting by writing to schoolboard@asd5.org. Comments or concerns not on the agenda can be brought to the attention of the district by contacting the Superintendents' Office or by contacting individual board members.
Sexual Health / HIV Curriculum Review
Parents have an opportunity to review the district's Sexual Health and HIV prevention curriculum from 5-6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, at Miller Junior High School. You can find the full announcement on the ASD5 website.
The district migrated over the summer to an updated version of Skyward called QMLATIV -- or just Q, for short. We hope this toolkit helps you get the most out of the new system.
