Building On Our Momentum, The Provan Way
Welcome to Week Seven! As we continue moving forward, this is a great opportunity to recognize the progress we have made while staying focused on the consistent practices that make a difference for our students every day.
This week, we continue strengthening our Strong Start practices while taking another step forward instructionally with the introduction of our Content Agnostic Coaching Tool. Our focus remains on being intentional—actively monitoring learning, asking purposeful questions, responding to student needs, following up, and looking for evidence that our support is moving students forward.
Week Seven also reminds us that our strength is in how we work together. Whether we are supporting students in classrooms, covering transitions, collaborating during PLCs, welcoming district partners, or simply stepping in when a teammate needs help, every role contributes to the success of Provan.
As you move through the week, remember: greatness is not built in one big moment. It is created through the small, consistent choices we make every day.
Let’s continue to Engage Academically, Inspire Socially, and Grow Emotionally while ensuring every student feels seen, supported, challenged, and capable of success.
Different Roles. Same Purpose. One Provan Family.

From Strong Start to Strong Instruction: Seeing the Learning
WEEK SEVEN INSTRUCTIONAL FOCUS
As we enter Week Seven, we continue building on the Strong Start practices that have established consistency, structure, and instructional presence across Provan.
Over the past several weeks, our focus on Active Monitoring During Student Work Time has progressed from simply being up, visible, circulating, and engaged to intentionally using what we notice to question, provide feedback, support students, and follow up.
Those expectations remain.
This week, we add a new lens: the Content Agnostic Coaching Tool.
The purpose of this tool is not to create “one more thing” for teachers to do. Instead, it gives us a common lens for looking at the instructional practices that support student learning regardless of the content area, course, or learning platform.
THE WEEK SEVEN SHIFT
From Watching Students Work To Looking For Evidence Of Learning
As leaders visit classrooms, we will continue observing active monitoring while also using the Content Agnostic Coaching Tool to help identify strengths, trends, and opportunities for instructional growth.
The Question Becomes:
What evidence tells us that students are not only completing work but actually learning?
What Leaders Will Look For
During Week Seven walkthroughs, leaders will use the new coaching tool while continuing to look for evidence that teachers:
- Establish a clear learning objective and success criteria so students understand what they are expected to learn.
- Intentionally circulate and actively monitor learning, progress, pacing, and completion.
- Examine student work rather than simply checking whether a student is logged in or has a screen open.
- Ask purposeful questions that reveal student thinking and understanding.
- Identify misconceptions, confusion, disengagement, or stalled progress early.
- Provide specific, actionable, in-the-moment feedback based on student need.
- Adjust support through clarification, reteaching, conferencing, or targeted one-on-one/small-group instruction.
- Circle back after providing support to determine whether the student responded successfully.
- Maintain an environment where students know that adults are paying attention to both their learning and their success.
NOTICE → QUESTION → RESPOND → CHECK THE IMPACT
Our active-monitoring cycle continues, but Week Seven asks us to become even more intentional about the evidence we collect.
- Notice: What are students doing, saying, writing, producing, or demonstrating?
- Question: What does that evidence tell me about what the student understands?
- Respond: What feedback, clarification, redirection, reteaching, or support does the student need?
- Check the Impact: Did my response move the student's learning forward?
A NEW TOOL, NOT A NEW “GOTCHA”
The Content Agnostic Coaching Tool is designed to support coaching, reflection, and instructional growth. It provides us with a shared language for recognizing effective practices and identifying meaningful next steps.
As you become familiar with the tool, don't focus on trying to “perform” for it.
Focus on the students.
- What are they learning?
- How do you know?
- What are you doing when they aren't there yet?
When those questions drive instruction, strong evidence will naturally follow.
From Proficient to Exemplar to The Provan Way
- Proficient: I monitor students and provide support when they need it.
- Exemplar: I use evidence from student work and responses to determine what support or instructional adjustment is needed.
The Provan Way: I consistently notice, respond, follow up, and use evidence of learning to ensure every student continues moving forward.
Two Questions To Drive Your Next Lap
As you circulate this week, continue asking yourself:
- What am I learning about my students right now?
- How do I know my response moved their learning forward?
That second question is where reflection becomes instructional impact.
Strong instruction is not about putting on a show during a walkthrough. It is about the consistent instructional decisions we make when no one is watching but our students.
CIRCULATE → NOTICE → QUESTION → RESPOND → FOLLOW UP → MEASURE IMPACT
Every lap should reveal something.
Every question should uncover thinking.
Every response should have purpose.
Every follow-up should check the impact.
Every student should know that their success matters.
As we begin using the Content Agnostic Coaching Tool in Week Seven, let's continue building on the strong practices already underway not by adding more, but by becoming more intentional with what we already do.
Engage Academically. Inspire Socially. Grow Emotionally.

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month at Provan OC
Leadership & Breaking Barriers
From September 15 through October 15, Provan Opportunity Center proudly recognizes Hispanic Heritage Month, a time to celebrate the histories, cultures, traditions, achievements, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans.
At Provan OC, celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month connects directly to our commitment to Engage Academically, Inspire Socially, and Grow Emotionally. Learning about the experiences and accomplishments of others helps our students broaden their perspectives, recognize the power of perseverance, and understand that greatness can be built in many different ways.
Throughout Hispanic Heritage Month, we will feature a Daily Hispanic Heritage Spotlight highlighting influential individuals, important moments in history, cultural traditions, and inspiring contributions in education, science, the arts, sports, leadership, and service.
Our goal is not simply to recognize history, but to help students see connections to their own futures. Each spotlight reminds us that our backgrounds, experiences, talents, and stories can become part of the legacy we leave for others.
Daily Hispanic Heritage Spotlight
Monday – Ellen Ochoa: Reaching Beyond the Limits
Dr. Ellen Ochoa became the first Hispanic woman to travel to space in 1993. An engineer, astronaut, and later director of NASA's Johnson Space Center, her story demonstrates the importance of education, determination, and continuing to pursue challenging goals.
Provan Connection: Greatness begins when we believe there is more we can achieve.
Tuesday – Roberto Clemente: Greatness Through Service
Roberto Clemente was an extraordinary baseball player, but his legacy extends far beyond athletics. He was known for his humanitarian work and commitment to helping communities in need. His life reminds us that success is also measured by how we use our gifts to help others.
Provan Connection: Creating a legacy means using your strengths to make a positive difference.
Wednesday – Sonia Sotomayor: Perseverance and Possibility
Justice Sonia Sotomayor made history in 2009 as the first Hispanic justice on the U.S. Supreme Court. Raised in the Bronx, she has often spoken about the importance of education, hard work, and perseverance.
Provan Connection: Where you begin does not determine how far you can go.
Thursday – Selena Quintanilla: Culture, Talent & Determination
Known as the "Queen of Tejano Music," Texas-born Selena Quintanilla became one of the most celebrated Mexican-American performers of her generation. Her music helped introduce Tejano culture to wider audiences, and her legacy continues to influence artists today.
Provan Connection: Your culture, talents, and individuality can be part of your greatness.
Friday – Lydia Mendoza- A Texas Music Pioneer
Born in Houston to a Mexican-American family, Lydia Mendoza became an influential figure in Tejano and Mexican-American music. Known as La Alondra de la Frontera "The Lark of the Border" her career helped preserve and share the musical traditions of Mexican-American communities.
Provan Connection: Leadership begins when we recognize that our choices and voices can positively impact others.
Think About It: How can you use your voice in a positive way?
You do not have to be famous to create a legacy of greatness. It begins with the decisions you make today how you treat others, how you respond to challenges, how committed you are to your education, and how willing you are to grow.
Every positive choice is another step forward.

Student RAVES: In Their Own Words
The Impact of The Provan Way
One of the greatest measures of our work is what students carry with them when they leave Provan. During the exit process, students are asked to reflect on the educators and practices that helped them feel supported, successful, and ready for their next chapter.
Student RAVEs celebrates those reflections and gives our students an opportunity to say thank you to the people who made a difference along the way.
This Week’s Student RAVEs

THIS IS WHY WE DO THE WORK.
These RAVEs are reminders that students may not remember every assignment, lesson, or conversation but they remember the adults who listened, encouraged, challenged, supported, and believed in them.
Every interaction matters. Every relationship matters. Every student matters.

Phoenix Spotlight: Students of the Week
At Provan Opportunity Center, Student of the Week is about more than recognizing a job well done it is about celebrating students who are demonstrating what it means to grow and succeed The Provan Way.
Our mission calls us to improve ourselves daily through meaningful academics, inspire successful transitions back to the home campus, and grow students’ social and emotional capacity. Through our commitment to Engaging Academically, Inspiring Socially, and Growing Emotionally, we want every student to recognize that each positive decision, completed assignment, respectful interaction, and moment of perseverance is part of something bigger.
