FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
On Monday, March 24th, another update on information from the Pennsylvania Department of Education regarding recent federal executive orders that may impact our schools and educational services was shared with Parents/Guardians and CSD Staff via a seperate communication by the Superintendent of Schools. Please see the message below in case you missed it.
A Message from Acting Secretary Rowe Recent Federal Executive Orders
Dear Partner in Education,
I am writing to provide you with an update on President Trump’s executive order to dismantle the United States Department of Education (USDE) entitled, “Improving Education Outcomes by Empowering Parents, States, and Communities.”
While we know that it will take an act of Congress to disband the Department, the executive order directs U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon “to the maximum extent appropriate and permitted by law, take all necessary steps to facilitate the closure of the Department of Education and return authority over education to the States and local communities while ensuring the effective and uninterrupted delivery of services, programs, and benefits on which Americans rely.”
Next week, I will be traveling to Washington D.C., where Secretary McMahon has confirmed a meeting with me and several of my fellow state Secretaries of Education. I intend to openly share the concerns I have heard expressed by Pennsylvania’s school administrators, librarians, and others, and ensure she hears some of the realized and potential impacts on Pennsylvanians if the proposed plan is enacted, including:
- Canceled or delayed repayments of funding used for implementing structured literacy plans, tutoring and after-school programs, reducing class sizes, and augmenting instructional supports;
- Uncertainty regarding the future of ESSA and IDEA funds which are used to ensure all students receive access to a free and appropriate public education, especially our most vulnerable students;
- Delayed responses to Civil Rights inquiries, including those for our most vulnerable students;
- Barriers to accessing postsecondary education, due to limited financial aid assistance and military ASVAB testing; and
- Loss of technical assistance from USDE staff and the 14 Regional Comprehensive Centers that develop critical resources and guidance documents to benefit all Pennsylvania schools.
I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the proposed elimination of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) under another recent executive order entitled, “Continuing the Reduction of the Federal Bureaucracy.” IMLS is the only federal agency dedicated to funding library services, and Pennsylvania libraries rely heavily on services funded by the agency, including the SPARK Library consortium, PA Forward and POWER Library. While the full extent of changes remains uncertain, the agency’s proposed elimination raises concerns about disruptions to these services.
As Governor Josh Shapiro said last week, “The President indicated that they're not going to pull back any dollars to our Commonwealth. If they do, I'll be prepared to take action, just as I was a month ago when they froze over $2 billion worth of money that was scheduled to come to the Commonwealth to help plug wells and stop people from literally falling into abandoned mines. We sued, we engaged, we won, and we got our money back. So if anybody tries to take anything from Pennsylvania, particularly our students, they'll have to go through me.” It is paramount that we ensure students and families – particularly those who are most vulnerable, including students with disabilities and those from low-income families – have access to a free and fair education system.
As I gain more clarity on the executive order and its impacts from my meeting with Secretary McMahon and our federal education partners, I will stay in close communication with you. In the meantime, I encourage you to work closely with your professional education associations to inform them about how these federal actions would impact your school communities.
Thank you for all that you do on behalf of Pennsylvania’s schools, libraries, learners, and communities.

Pennsylvania Department of Education
ACADEMICS
Willow Dale Reading Olympics
On Tuesday, March 25th, Willow Dale's two Reading Olympics teams traveled to Council Rock School District to compete in the 2025 Reading Olympics competition. The students met after school to prepare, reading many of the 25 pre-selected books on the Reading Olympics list. After competing in three rounds of trivia questions, our "Golden Readers" received a red ribbon and our "Powerful Pumas" received a green ribbon. Thank you to all our staff who helped out at the competition. What a great night to celebrate our love of reading!
Pi Day Pizza Party at McDonald
On Friday, March 14th, the 5th-grade students in C21 celebrated Pi Day in the most delicious way—by making their own pizza pies! As they explored the mathematical magic of π, students shaped their dough into circles, added circular toppings like pepperoni and (pi)neapple rings, and measured the circumference and diameter of their creations. After baking—thanks to our amazing cafeteria staff—they re-measured their pizzas and, of course, enjoyed every bite of their tasty math lesson. Learning has never been so cheesy and fun!
Robotics Competition Held at William Tennent HS
The William Tennent High School is hosting the FIRST Mid Atlantic Week 5 Qualifier this weekend in the gym. Come out to support the William Tennent Robotics Team, Saturday and Sunday! The event will feature exciting robotics matches and showcase incredible student innovation – don’t miss the action!

Exciting Memories from Klinger Middle School's First-Ever Color Run!
What an incredible day it was at Klinger Middle School! Our first-ever Klinger Middle School Color Run, organized by the Student Council, was a huge success. On a gorgeous day, over 60 students hit the course, creating memories that will last a lifetime and raising funds for an amazing cause.
The event was filled with laughter, smiles, and vibrant colors, as participants of all ages came together to support our Mini-THON, which will take place on April 4th. The Color Run kicked off with a fun and energizing warm-up, and students raced through the course as teachers, acting as powder bottle volunteers, showered them with colorful powder at each checkpoint. By the end, everyone was covered in a rainbow of hues—showing off their colorful spirit!
We are thrilled to announce that we raised over $3,000 during this event for Mini-THON, which benefits the Four Diamonds Foundation. Our goal is to raise $5,000 for this great cause, and with your help, we’re already over halfway there!
The Color Run was not just about having fun but about coming together as a school community to make a real difference. Thank you to all the students, teachers, and volunteers who made this event possible. Your support is truly appreciated!
Want to help us reach our goal? If you'd like to donate to our Mini-THON, please visit our donation page and make a donation to the Four Diamonds Foundation. Every little bit counts in the fight against childhood cancer!
We can’t wait to see even more students at Mini-THON on April 4th. Let’s keep the momentum going and hit our $5,000 goal together!

Log College Student is a State Champion
Log College student and local gymnast Michael Ward recently competed in the Pennsylvania State Men’s Gymnastics Championships. He placed first all around in the state as well as championed in parallel bar and high bar in his level! We wish Michael luck as he moves on to the Regional Championships and, hopefully, Eastern Nationals.
Elementary March Madness Championships
Davis, McDonald, and Willow Dale students participated in the annual March Madness tournament. The champions of each school competed against one another and showed off their skills, determination, and sportsmanship in the finals this past week. Congrats to the McDonald "Tigers" (boys) and Willow Dale "Buckets" (girls) on winning the championship!

March Snack Madness at Klinger
It is the end of March, and Klinger wrapped up our March Snack Madness. Based on the idea of March Madness basketball, students throughout the school filled out brackets involving candy and snacks instead of basketball teams. Students started by learning the math behind the probability of completing the perfect bracket and then voted for their favorite snack. Students used the data to make math connections.
Some highlights of this year’s competition include Swedish Fish winning over Fruit by the Foot in the second round by only one vote! Our competition concluded with Sour Patch Kids defeating Twix in the last round. Shout out to our Home and School Association for funding sweet prizes for our school’s top bracket winners!
