Message from Dr. Antonelli

Dear Norwood Families,

I hope everyone had a great weekend! It was great to see everyone at our festivities on Saturday! Thank you to all are volunteers and especially to our PTA for organizing two great events!

We had a great presentation from Special Olympics on Inclusion. Norwood is now a Special Olympics Unified Champion School. We will be launching Special Olympics Inclusive Youth Leadership program. Students in grade 3-5 can serve on the leadership program to be match with buddies.

We have a new Norwood student Council. Thank you to all students who choose to run for offices! All who were selected received congratulatory letters and a list of meeting dates. We will be meeting once a month on Mondays during lunch. I look forward to working with everyone!

I received a call from a nice local family. They are concerned about the way people are driving through the neighborhood during arrival and dismissal, speeding and running stop signs. Please be mindful of this. Thank you for helping to keep the Norwood neighborhood safe!

Breakfast and Lunch Program Breakfast and Lunch Program

As a reminder breakfast service begins at 8:40am. On June 30, 2022 the free breakfast and lunch waiver provided by the state ended. The Meal Benefit Expiration and Grace period has ended. This means that students that were free/reduced previously and have not applied to receive the continued benefits will now be charged for the full meal price. All families, regardless of status, will need to complete the lunch application. We still need 108 families to complete their application. It is important that all families complete the lunch application. This helps with our Title I funding, resources and activities. It can help provide discounts on resources and activities for teachers and students. Information on how to complete your form can be found here. You can also contact the main office or see the district website if you have questions.

Just head to https://arttoremember.com/school/8b79mw and search for your child’s name, enter their online order code, or upload artwork from home and start shopping!

Adding Art Upload from Home

Our school is participating in a creative fundraiser with Art to Remember that allows you to purchase keepsake products customized with your child's art. There are over 50 products and many are less than $15. These make great gifts and a percentage of every purchase goes right back to our school. The exciting part is that you can select any piece of artwork from home! You can use art from e-learning, choose a piece from earlier in the year, or create something new. Just click on the link below, search for your child’s name, and upload the piece of artwork you selected. You can upload additional pieces and save them in a digital family gallery. Have fun creating and shopping!

Healthy Habits Tip from Lysol

With Halloween on the horizon, it’s important for children to eat a healthy and balanced diet among all of the treats. Diet should include a variety of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, fat-free and low-fat dairy products, and a variety of proteins. Healthy eating can help lower certain health risks, improve memory and boost mood during the school day

Attendance Attendance

From The Rhode Island Department of Education

What is Chronic Absenteeism?

Chronic Absenteeism is a measure of how many students miss a defined number of school days for any reason. Rhode Island defines Chronic Absenteeism as the percentage of students who miss 10% or more school days during the year (or 2 days per month).

Research shows that chronic absenteeism is associated with a number of negative consequences for students, including lower achievement, disengagement from school, course failure, and increased risk of dropping out.

Missing 10% of school or more makes it harder to learn

Early Dismissals

Please refrain from requesting an early dismissal for your child after 2:45pm. The dismissal process begins at 3:05pm and it becomes very difficult for us to fill an early dismissal request once the process begins.

Student Absences

Students will be marked absent, no matter the reason, if they are not in school.

If the absence is COVID related it will be entered as an excused absence.

STUDENT ABSENCE CALL-IN PROCEDURE

In accordance with Rhode Island State Law #16-19-10, Notification of Pupil Absence, the Warwick School Department requires that all parents/guardians call their child’s elementary school on the day that he/she will not be in attendance. We would like to receive all calls by 9:15 in the morning. If you are aware of a pending absence, feel free to call at any time prior to the day of the absence. In the event we do not hear from you, an automated call will be sent at 10:00 a.m. to inform you that your child did not arrive at school.
