Art

Artists are now starting an acrylic painting on canvas board. We discussed several painting styles throughout art history, and students will incorporate one of those styles into their own work. We just wrapped up a clay sculpture project last week, and will be firing them in the kiln very soon! After the current painting project, we will transition to painting the clay sculptures. Can’t wait to see how everything turns out!

Band

The 7th Grade band will be working on rhythm labeling and recognition, Concert B-flat, E-flat, F, and A-flat Scales/Exercises, and preparing for our Winter Concert. The Winter Concert is Tuesday, December 16th, in the High School Auditeria. The concert begins at 7pm, but the students need to report at 6:15pm to warm-up. Concert details will be sent out at the beginning of November. We hope to see you there!

Choir

7th Grade Treble Choir

Students are working diligently on refining their tone, singing strong in two-parts, and reading solfege. Some concert selections we are currently working on include “Walking in the Air” from the classic movie: the Snowman, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Alleluia Canon”, Rollo Dilworth’s “Mornin’ Glory”, and a medley of famous Holiday songs. Students are very excited for their upcoming concert, which is December 9th.

7th/8th Grade Baritone Choir

Students have begun preparing music for their upcoming Winter concert and are assisting the 8th graders in learning their parts for a four part version of the “Star Spangled Banner” for Veterans Day. Students have also been working on their sight-reading skills along with music theory. Some of the selections we have been working on are Victor C. Johnson’s “Baraka na Wewe”, the Scottish folk song “Loch Lomond”, the Spanish carol “A la ru”, and “Gaudete!” which is a song in Latin, Students are very excited for their upcoming concert, which is December 9th.

Engineering

During the second quarter, 7th grade engineering students will be shifting focus from hands-on projects to more modern digital design. We are fortunate to have industry-standard software–SolidWorks–for the students to learn and grow with. The learning-curve is steep, but once students get the hang of it, it’s so much fun to see what they create! We learn dozens of skills specific to 3D modeling (orthographic sketching, dimensioning, extruding, revolving, lofting, etc.) and also gain an appreciation for how 3D models are made… so the next time they 3D print something, they can think “I could make that!” …or maybe… “I could make that better!”

Journeys Ahead

We will continue our exploration and hands-on activities that involve the Law, Public Safety, Corrections & Security; Marketing, Sales & Service; Manufacturing; Hospitality & Tourism, Transportation, Distribution & Logistics and Government & Public Administration clusters. We will also work to improve our collaboration, reliability and conflict resolution skills.

PE and Wellness

In PE, students will be working on competitions with mini sports. Students will also be moving into creating their own games, spikeball, and then a unit on stretching/yoga (a reminder will go out the week before this unit). In Wellness, students will be looking back at goals we made at the beginning of the semester, starting their Nutrition unit, and ending the semester with learning about sleep and health connections (a reminder will be sent out the week before we do this unit).

Technology

7th grade is doing some fantastic work in computer science class! They’re finishing up a unit about being a savvy online consumer, having preceded it with discussions about when websites are reliable and how to be a smart Googler. Next up, they’ll be working with a bit of video editing as they create a commercial for the school!

Discovery and Design

Students in Discovery and Design have just wrapped up their 3D printing unit, where they learned how to take digital models and bring them to life using 3D printers. As we move into the second quarter, students will shift their focus to designing amusement park rides, applying creativity and problem-solving through hands-on projects. They will continue to strengthen their coding skills using a variety of platforms, while consistently using the design process to plan, test, and improve their ideas. This next unit will challenge them to think like real engineers and designers as they combine imagination with technology.

ELA

Mrs. Huber's, Mrs. Danner's, and Mrs. Kline's Classes:

As we transition into the second quarter, ELA 7 is venturing back in time to the days of Edgar Allan Poe. We will explore a sampling of Poe’s poetry and short stories as a way to study how an author carries the same themes across his literature, how themes can bridge poetry and stories, and how stories are transformed into different genres. The unit concludes with a class-wide mystery that must be solved! .

Mrs. Heinig's Enriched ELA Classes:

Beginning the second quarter, our students will be focusing on characters & conflict in realistic fiction selections. Students will be reading quite a few texts, including short stories such as "Thank You, Ma'am" by Langston Hughes, “What’s the Worst That Could Happen?” by Bruce Coville, “How the Teen Brain Transforms Relationships” by Daniel Siegel , “The Party” by Pam Muñoz Ryan, “Hanging Fire” by Audre Lorde, “Saturday at the Canal” by Gary Soto , “First-Day Fly” by Jason Reynolds, “Teens’ Penchant for Risk-Taking May Help Them Learn Faster” by Erin Ross, “Momentum” by Catherine Doty, “Popularity” by Adam Bagdasarian, that teach about belonging, community, and adolesence. Through these texts, we will focus on building students' skills in citing textual evidence, analyzing themes, and examining how specific elements of stories and dramas interact. In their writing, students will have the opportunity to showcase their skills across multiple genres such as narrative, literary analysis, and character studies. Our Project-Based Learning has included an Alaskan Survival Challenge and eight Makerspace Team Building experiences in the library. Coming up, we will be launching into independent Nonfiction research passion projects, as well as more team building.

Math

Math 7

In Math 7, we have just finished Module 3: “Operations with Integers.” We are moving into Module 4: “Operations with Rational Numbers” which includes operations with positive and negative fractions and decimals. This is also a no-calculator module. Later this quarter, we will work on Module 5: “Simplifying Expressions” and Module 6: “Solving Equations.” Students should also continue to work on their weekly Aleks assignments. We will be MAP testing on November 17th and 18th.

Math 7+

In Math 7 Accelerated, we have concluded Module 3 on rational numbers and are embarking on Module 4. In the module, “Exponents and Scientific Notation,” students will use their prior knowledge of exponents to develop an understanding of the properties of exponents and scientific notation. Students must stay focused and disciplined as we cover 7th and 8th-grade topics. Later this quarter, we will also work on Simplifying Expressions and Solving Equations. Students should continue to work on their weekly Aleks assignments. We will be MAP testing on November 17th and 18th.

Science

Science students are learning about electricity. This week, they completed a static electricity lab that was “shockingly” fun. Next week, they are building parallel and series circuits. Soon, we will use Ohm’s Law to design a dimmer switch and investigate how electric current can be measured using a compass. Our final project for Chapter Six will have the students building a simple flashlight of their own design with only a limited number of materials.

Social Studies

In social studies, we are moving through our study of Ancient Greece by diving into Greek Mythology! Students will study the purpose and history of Greek myths and then create their own myth on a topic of their choosing. This creative writing project reinforces 7th grade language arts standards and encourages students to get creative! We are looking forward to wrapping up our study of Greece by looking at the Golden Age of Athens, the Peloponnesian War, and the conquest of Alexander the Great during the first half of the second quarter!

Common Sense Media

Common Sense Media is an online tool that can help parents and students make informed decisions regarding media use. This tool can be used for many types of media, including books, movies, video games, and apps. Additionally, the “Parent Tips and FAQ” section can provide families with valuable support on facilitating social media, cell phone, and screen time use with their child.
