National Honor Society
Invitations for National Honor Society (NHS) will be sent out by the end of January. To qualify for NHS, students MUST take 4 credits of honors, advanced or dual enrollment classes each year and maintain a GPA of at least 3.5. Students who wish to graduate with Honors, High Honors or Highest Honors, students MUST be a member of the National Honor Society. Please see the handbook for further details.
Students will be asked to complete an application form and return it to Ms. Coles, Mr. Whitehead or Ms. Mathie. We will make the decision and notify them of their membership acceptance. Due dates will be given on the application form. If students want to be considered, they MUST turn in their application by the due dates on the acceptance letter. Late applications will not be considered for membership. If you choose not to accept, this will be your ONLY opportunity to join NHS. Make this opportunity count.
On Dec. 3, BHS National Honor Society served at the community Christmas Tree Fantasy Tea. We had 14 students participate and it was a success! Here's a couple of pictures...
Senior Scholarships
Local senior scholarships are opening up. Don't let them pass without applying. Seniors can find a current list in their 2025 Google classroom.
FAFSA
FAFSA is open for seniors. Students will create an account and fill out their side of it. Parents will then receive an email to complete their part. This must be done to qualify for Launch and Idaho Opportunity Scholarships. Reach out to Angelee Dalley with any questions or for help. FAFSA help will also be at Parent-teacher conferences on Jan. 20, 5-7 p.m., in the New gym.
Science Round-up
In Zoology B, Mr. Neff's class recently began the unit on sharks. We'll be studying what makes sharks unique, from their skeletal structure to their digestive systems. Our study will culminate in a 2-day dissection lab where we'll dissect a dogfish shark. We'll begin by looking at their fascinating skin structure, followed by muscle groups, and continuing to look at the organ systems in the body cavity. Students are always anxious to see what their sharks ate for their "last meal"!!!
Mrs. Wood is excited to announce a new science club in addition to the many clubs offered here at BHS!! Science Club is a way to explore and engage in the world of science! Hands on experiments and activities based around the interest of our club members. Meeting in Mrs. Wood's room 406 on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month during club time!
Mr. Loomis: Students turned a nursery rhyme into reality on Tuesday, Dec 19th as their protected "Humpty Dumpties" were flung from the roof. Each student waited in anticipation as Mr. Lance gleefully hurled various egg drop devices into the air. Silence, then (most of the time) the inevitable crunch. Worried, the students would rush to the side of their egg, hoping for dear life that the egg survived. Mere moments would indicate the success or failure of their task. However, after the cheers and tears, there is always a buzz of excitement to share what their results were. Yet again, another happy landing. For most at least.
Mr. Pettinger: It is dissection season in Human A&P B. Hands on is always preferred, when teaching any Biology topic. We go from looking at pictures in a book to holding the organ in our hands. During the nervous system unit, we dissected a sheep brain. The first dissection always brings out the curiosity and queasy stomachs. Our second dissection will be a sheep eye. Comparing a sheep eye to a human eye truly gives students a deeper appreciation for vision. This is my favorite part of Human A&P and quickly becomes many students' favorite too.
Mr. Earley: Physical science students are learning the fundamental principles of the physical world. In chemistry, students are balancing chemical equations to understand conservation of matter. Chemistry students have developed custom projects to deepen their understanding. One student prepared the same flan recipe twice changing the eggs for egg whites and observed a significant change in the overall texture and stability of the flan without substantially affecting the taste. In physics, students are learning how to measure kinetic energy in a 40-yard dash. Physics students investigated momentum and Newton’s Laws of Motion by designing, building, and testing a contraption that could protect an egg from a 2-story drop.

SOURCES OF STRENGTH
BHS's Sources of Strength Club chose the theme of Gratitude for our first campaign by having the school participate in 2 activities:
1) the door decorating contest - a fun way for students and teachers working together to build connections through sharing a positive message about gratitude.
2) the snowflake cutouts - give students the opportunity to write 3 things they are most grateful for.
Our club wanted a fun way for students and staff to see the messages of gratitude throughout BHS and to remember what they have to be grateful for.
Why focus on gratitude?
Gratitude is the expression of appreciation for what we have. Gratitude generates of climate of positivity and is an affirmation of goodness and warmth. Gratitude strengthens relationships and recognizes the value of helping other and being helped in return. Over time, feeling grateful boosts happiness and fosters both physical and psychological health. (compiled from Psychology Today)
College and Career Fair
The Bingham County College and Career Fair was a fantastic success! Over 70 colleges, programs, and businesses came together to provide students with opportunities to explore their future careers.
