WBL Frequently Asked Questions & Answers
What period(s) is WBL?
- You may leave school early for periods 3-7 or come in late for 1, 2, 3, or 4 periods. Students are usually placed in Mrs. Phillips' advisement classes, which means you don't have to stay for advisement. This is approved by administration.
- Mrs. Phillips can help you get a job, or you can get one on your own, as long as it's approved. It's not required to have a job to sign up/register; a job isn't required until school starts next school year (in August). Mrs. Phillips has many job leads.
- You can work any time during the week, it doesn't necessarily have to be when you leave school, and you certainly don't have to work every day. Most students work 2-3 days per week.
- For one period of WBL, you have to work 5 hours per week.
- For two periods of WBL, you are required to work 10 hours per week.
- For three periods of WBL, you are required to work 15 hours per week.
- For four periods of WBL, you are required to work 20 hours per week.
- If you are in Mrs. Phillips advisement, you may leave, but you don't have to work during that time.
- Yes, WBL counts as elective class credit. You earn a course credit, and a grade, for every period you leave school (for work) just as if you were sitting in a class here at Parkview. Once again, It isn't required for you to work during the hours that you leave school; you may work anytime during the week.
How will I be graded?
- You have to turn in a time sheet and pay stubs monthly, and you have one assignment per month to do on your own time. There are one-two employer evaluations per semester. There are no tests.
- No! The purpose of the course is for students to gain work/internship experience, not to have a lot of work. It's extremely easy to earn an A in the class. Once again, you earn course credit for the periods you aren't in school just like you would if you were sitting in a class at school. You earn course credit for EVERY period you leave school, except advisement.
- You can participate in WBL and Dual Enrollment. Many students do both. Students also participate in WBL and sports. Some students don't even come to school between Dual Enrollment and WBL.
What happens if I lose my job? Do I fail?
- No, if you notify Mrs. Phillips immediately, Mrs. Phillips will work with you to find another job. While no one wants to lose a job, this is intended to be a learning experience.
- Yes, you may change jobs once per semester without being penalized. You must notify Mrs. Phillips before doing so.
- If it's temporary (seasonal) and no fault of yours, Mrs. Phillips will work with you. Otherwise, Mrs. Phillips will help you to find another job.
- You may email Mrs. Phillips or stop by 1.560 (located in the cafeteria across from the computer lab) at any time. When you receive your registration form, stop by for Mrs. Phillips to initial.
