Reading & Language Arts

Over the next three weeks, our class will build their knowledge about identity, with a focus on a variety of story types. We will read texts and view videos about how our experiences help shape our identity. The genre focus in this module is different kinds of stories, including fantasy, realistic fiction, and folktales. Discuss with your child the similarities and differences of these story types.

This year in 4th grade Reading and Language Arts, your child will be practicing and completing Extended Constructed Response (ECR) essays as part of their learning. An ECR is a longer written response where students answer a question by:

  • Stating a clear main idea or topic sentence
  • Using evidence from the text they have read (examples, quotes, or details)
  • Explaining their thinking and connecting it back to the main idea
  • Concluding with a strong closing statement

These essays give students the chance to show their understanding of what they’ve read and strengthen their writing skills.

Math

September is a big month for our fourth-grade mathematicians! We have been working on place value to the billions place, and we will soon start addition and subtraction concepts with whole numbers. Students will then review third grade multiplication and division as we begin our next unit, which focuses on multiplication and division of multi-digit whole numbers. This is a great time to practice multiplication and division facts! The more students are familiar with multiplication and division facts, the easier it will be to conquer more challenging mathematical concepts this month and beyond.

Science

In Science, students will continue to classify and describe matter. They will use observable physical properties, including mass, magnetism, and relative density (the ability to sink or float in water). After the assessment, they will continue with changes to matter, including properties of mixtures and solutions. They will be able to distinguish between mixtures and solutions. Also, students will investigate and compare a variety of mixtures, including solutions that are composed of liquids in liquids and solids in liquids. They will be able to understand what happens when matter is mixed together.

Social Studies

In Social Studies, your child will be learning about Texas and its regions. They will learn about the land and vegetation in each region.
