Welcome Back, Mustang Families!

What a joy it has been to see our hallways buzzing with excitement as we kick off another incredible school year! The first week has been absolutely wonderful, filled with new faces, reunited friendships, and that special energy that only comes with fresh beginnings.

As we settle into our routines, I wanted to remind you that I'll be sending out these weekly updates every Friday at 3:00 PM. Consider it your weekly dose of school happenings, celebrations, and important information—delivered right to your inbox as you head into the weekend. You can find them on our website: https://www.d120.org/about-mhs/principals-newsletter/

This year, I'm committed to keeping the beginning of our journey together lighthearted and joyful. In an effort to do just that, I've tried something completely different!

I've created what I'm calling the "Gen-Z Principal's Tour"—complete with all the latest slang and trends our students are using. I have a feeling our current students are going to absolutely love it (and probably cringe just a little bit, which is exactly what I'm going for!).

For those of us who are millennials or baby boomers, I strongly recommend turning on those closed captions. Trust me, the vernacular has evolved quite a bit since our teenage years, and some of these terms might leave you wondering if we're even speaking the same language!

Here's to a year filled with learning, laughter, and maybe picking up some new slang along the way!

Go Mustangs!

Due to MHS building construction efforts, school days will be slightly different for the next couple of years. Our Board of Education has approved school-year calendars for 2026-2027 and 2027-2028 so we may all have an opportunity to do some advanced planning.

Shoutouts! Shoutouts!

While Mundelein High School is undergoing facilities improvements, the high school construction is not expected to impede traffic flow. MHS has built new bus lanes in the same place as last year and the school construction site will be behind a fence on the west side of the building.

“The school buses are going to come in the same way,” said MHS Facilities Director Kevin Quinn. “There will be no change to the parking lot, so our construction will have minimal impact on traffic.”

Students arriving by bus will enter the school at the same entrance as in previous years but will walk under a temporary canopy to enter. The construction area will be fenced off and the temporary canopy will be weather-proofed and equipped with lighting and cameras.

School begins at 8:40 a.m. starting on Wednesday, Aug. 13 and ending at 3:20 p.m. The school will be open early and students driving to school or being dropped off are welcome to get to school early. There will be no construction - and no changes - this year to the east side of campus where student parking and drop-off are located.

Activity buses will pick up at the main entrance at 5:00pm and 6:30pm.

MHS Calendar Updates

In an effort to allow for construction at MHS to proceed as effectively as possible, the D120 School Board on Tuesday night adjusted the school year calendar for the next two years. The 2025-26 calendar will not change.

It allows for longer summers to work on building additions and improvements. Our staff will begin working immediately to address many more details to minimize the impact on students and families.

September 1 - NO SCHOOL - Labor Day

"The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on September 5, 1883.

By 1894, 23 more states had adopted the holiday, and on June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed a law making the first Monday in September of each year a national holiday."
