WELCOME BACK!
The SST16 consultants would like to welcome you back to a new year. We hope you had a great summer. We are so impressed with the work and professional learning happening in several districts around the region. Some of those topics include data to drive instruction at the TBT level, shared leadership teams including BLTs and TBTs working on a structured approach with agendas and working norms, co-teaching collaboration and planning, book studies focused around discipline and co-teaching, and networking through the Principal's Leadership Academy. We applaud you on all of this work that will continue to improve the outcomes and the educational experiences for our students.
DISTRICT SHOUT-OUT!
Congratulations to Gallia County Local Schools as our first DISTRICT SHOUT-OUT for the 2023-2024 school year for their work around Literacy.
The Ohio Department of Education was awarded a $42 million federal Comprehensive Literacy State Development Grant to expand ongoing district work to improve student language and literacy development. The Gallia County Local School District, over the past few years, has been awarded 3 of these grants. The grants include birth to age 5, kindergarten to grade 5, and, most recently, grades 6-12. By securing 3 of the grants, Gallia Local became the only public school system in the state to have a grant funded structured literacy program from birth to grade 12. As part of his effort to support literacy in Ohio schools, Governor Mike DeWine and several of his staff visited Vinton Elementary on Friday, March 31, 2023. During his visit he observed classroom activities aligned with the Science of Reading and conversed with teachers and administrators about the impact structured literacy has had on student learning. Recently Governor DeWine signed the Governor's Literacy Challenge to improve reading proficiency by establishing partnerships that encourage reading and developing strategies to increase family involvement in literacy development. Resources from the Department of Education and Workforce (formerly ODE)
Addressing Chronic Absenteeism
The Department of Education and Workforce has published the Ohio's Attendance Guide, linked below, to help districts and schools implement a comprehensive, structured, and tiered approach to this issue. It begins with a strong foundation at Tier 1, preventative and early interventions at Tier 2, and individualized attention at Tier 3. It is a systemic districtwide approach to addressing Ohio's Chronic Absenteeism problem.
