SEL Trait of the Month

Each month we will share a theme that Daniel Wright will be focus on that aligns with our monthly Social Emotional Learning (SEL) lessons. We are continuing to use our Social Emotional Learning curriculum Better Together Cubed. Learn more about the research behind this program on Better Together Cubed website.

September's SEL theme is building community and a sense of belonging. Our trait this month is Collaboration.

Collaboration is the process by which students work together to achieve common goals. In the classroom, students collaborate through group projects, peer to peer learning, and class discussions. Collaboration is also about understanding, empathizing, and supporting one another. This trait enhances learning and creates a positive school environment.

Here’s how you can help your teen develop these skills:

1. Encourage Self-Awareness: Help your teen recognize their own strengths and areas for growth in group settings. Encourage them to reflect on how they contribute to group work and how they can improve. Self-awareness allows them to understand their role in a team and how their actions impact others.

2. Promote Active Listening: Teach your teen the importance of listening to others' ideas and perspectives. Active listening is key to successful collaboration. Encourage them to practice this skill at home by engaging in discussions where they listen without interrupting and then reflect back what they’ve heard.

3. Foster Empathy and Social Awareness: Understanding and empathizing with others is crucial in any collaborative effort. Encourage your teen to consider the feelings and viewpoints of their peers. Role-playing scenarios or discussing diverse perspectives in current events can be great ways to develop this skill.

4. Teach Conflict Resolution: Collaboration often involves navigating disagreements. Teach your teen strategies for resolving conflicts in a respectful and constructive manner. This might include using "I" statements, seeking compromise, and focusing on finding solutions rather than winning arguments.

5. Encourage Teamwork through Family Activities: Engage in family activities that require teamwork, such as cooking a meal together or planning a family outing. These activities can provide a practical way to practice collaboration skills in a safe and supportive environment.

6. Highlight the Importance of Responsibility: Discuss with your teen the importance of fulfilling their responsibilities in a group setting. Whether it’s completing their part of a school project or contributing to household chores, understanding the impact of their actions on the group is essential.

7. Model Collaborative Behavior: Children often learn by example. Model collaborative behavior in your interactions with others. Show your teen how to work together with others, whether it's collaborating with a partner on a project, or working with community members on a local initiative.
