Principal's Message Principal's Message

Hello, Families,

We are so proud of Mrs. McClary for her recognition at Thursday's Board of Education meeting where she accepted the GJPS Heart & Pride Award. The award was created in 2023 to recognize the outstanding work of our GJPS staff. Each month, staff members, regardless of position can be nominated by anyone in our community for making a true impact on students and GJPS. Thank you, Mr. Donaldson, for nominating Mrs. McClary for this special and well-deserved acknowledgement.

First Grade Celebrates 100 Days of School First Grade Celebrates 100 Days of School

First grade students and teachers had a memorable day celebrating the 100th day of school. From math activities (love all of those ten groups of ten!) to wigs, it was a day of giggles and fun. Thank you, first grade teachers, Mrs. Denman, Miss Feeney, and Miss Odom for creating this day for your students.

5th graders are currently working on name mandalas. Last week students wrote their name in a triangle and then traced the triangle 8 times on their final paper. This week students are outlining their names in sharpie and starting to color in their project with colored pencils. These projects are looking amazing, I can’t wait to see how they look when they are colored in.

4th graders are currently working on creating a piece of faux stained glass. Last week students learned about stained glass and started designing their own piece. Students had to pick a subject, break it down into shapes, then fill the rest of the page around the subject with interlocking shapes. This week students are tracing their designs onto a piece of clear plastic and are starting to color in their design using colored sharpies. It has been so fun to see all of the different subjects students have featured in their project!

3rd graders are currently working on Eric Carle inspired animals. Students first picked an animal and then used oil pastels and texture plates to create textured drawings of the animal’s fur/coat/skin. After making the animals textures, students worked to cut out the shapes of their animals. Lastly, students are putting together the shapes of their animal and gluing the pieces together.

2nd graders are just starting a new project inspired by Black History Month and the artist Faith Ringgold. Students will be making an illustrated quilt, featuring four of their favorite things. This week we learned about Faith Ringgold, an American artist who made artwork about her life and her upbringing. After learning about Ringgold, students brainstormed some of their favorite things and came up with symbols to best represent them. After picking their symbols students drew them and wrote a couple sentences about why they chose them. Next week students will draw their symbols on final paper and color them in with markers.

1st graders and Kindergartners just finished making Olympic gold medals! Last week students rolled balls of clay and pressed them between two different textures. This past weekend I painted all of the student’s medals gold in preparation for students to finish their medals. This week students finished their medals by picking a ribbon and adding beads to their medal necklace. Students were VERY engaged in this project and were so excited to wear their medals home from class!

Questions to ask your student:

  • 1st and kindergarten students:

    • What sport would you want to play in the Winter Olympics?

    • What are the three colors of medals you can earn in the Olympics?
